Spore vs. Clone
    #6505376 -

I've seen it alluded too in various messages in this forum that growing from spores is generally not a good idea for edibles. Yet for magic mushrooms, everyone starts with spores, at least initially. Why is it okay to start with spores for these but not for edibles?

I am presently colonizing two jars of wood chips with Shiitake agar. The agar used for one of the jars was from cloned tissue; the agar used in the other was from spores. Thus far I've noticed that the jar with the cloned mycelium has grown a bit faster than the jar with mycelium from spores. But there is not a big difference. Apparently I will see a big difference when I try to fruit these?

Also I have some Oyster mushrooms fruiting now and I was hoping to just be able to save the spores for future grows but presumably it would be better to save a clone instead?

Spores of edibles works just fine. The cultures generated from spores tend to resemble the parent but there will be some genetic recombination that will cause unpredictable variations. Clones of proven cultures are better for reliable production but if you have the time you can usually select out a strain from spores that is as good or better than the parent.

The only reason hallucinogenic mushrooms are predominately distributed as spores is because it is illegal to market mycelium in most countries. I am sure many people would be interested in a ready-to-go, superior clone instead of selecting out their own from the spores of that same superior clone.
