Making Hash, question
    #6479344 -

I want to try this technique
Quote:
Blender

Unlike the previous methods which use screens to filter the trichomes, the blender method uses the principle that the resin glands are heavier than water, while other plant material is not.
The blender method uses water, ice and agitation to dislodge the trichomes. Ice-water makes the trichomes brittle, causing the resin glands to solidify and become easy to snap off. The glands are heavier than water so they sink to the bottom when separated, while the plant material floats.

To make hash this way you'll need a blender, ice cubes, a reusable metal coffee filter or silk screening, a large glass jar and paper coffee filters.

Fill the blender about half-way with skuff, then cover with cold water and add a tray of ice cubes. Blend for 45 seconds to a minute – the mixture will become green and frothy, like a smoothie. Pour this mix through the metal coffee filter into your glass jar. Run more water through the filter to make sure you haven't missed any trichomes.

Once your jar is full, put it in the fridge to settle for a minimum of 30 minutes. You 0should be able to see a white or blonde coloured substance settling on the bottom of your container – those are the trichomes. Carefully, so you do not disturb the trichomes, pour off or siphon off about two-thirds of the green water.

If you have more skuff to process, do it now and filter into the container you just drained. Return to the fridge, allow to settle and siphon again. When you have processed all your skuff, add a few ice cubes to the container and let settle one last time.

If you want to increase the purity of your product you can carefully put this settled mixture back into the blender for a final mix and separation. This may or may not be necessary depending on your preference.

Pour the final mix of water and trichomes through a paper coffee filter. The water will pass through the paper but the glands will not. Drain well and allow to dry. You now have dried resin glands ready to be pressed into hash.

What do they mean with a metal coffee filter? Would an ordinary sieve work? How big should the holes be?

Here's what a metal coffee filter looks like. You can buy them most anywhere they sell coffee machines.

I tried that blender method once and it didn't work that good for me. I blended it up too much and a lot of leaf ended up making it through the screen. When it was dry the final product was basically refined weed powder. It was OK but definitely not worth the hassle. If you try it let us know how it comes out.

I just use the coffee filter and a couple of smooth stones to collect trichomes. Youll have to find a plastic lid that will fit over the top of the filter and a couple polished stones. Then you put your trim and the stones in there and hold the lid on and gently shake it over a mirror. If your using good trim youll have a big pile of blonde crystals in no time.

Thank you
The mesh on that filter looks really fine, I didn't think the crystals would go through there. I'll see if I can buy one on Monday, shops are closed on Sunday :frown:
I'll try the blender method and report back.
If that doesn't work I'll try your method. Do you grind the trim before you put it in the filter with the stones?

affirmative , do grind the trim.
your trying to utilize any and all available resin glands. regardless of the plant part ; in the past i've made entire sticks of hash from leftover male plants and bullshit trimmings.
but quite honestly i would stick to the classic hash preparation - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yzagfg1v0rE

No, the stones will grind the trim up as you shake the filter. I use kind of a circular motion while I'm shaking the filter and then bang the stones up and down once in a while to knock off any crystals that may be sticking to the bottom. Once the trim gets too ground up, I dump it out and put some new trim in and keep going. Once you're all done take a razor and scrape it all into a pile. From there you can either press it or smoke it. Oh so good!:stoned:

I've seen those, but I don't want to spend a couple of hundred dollars for what are basically bags with a fine mesh screen.

Well there is alittle more to em then that but to each their own. They will last a lifetime though but like everything else it costs. A lot also depemds on how much you grow. With the amounts seen in these parts water and a blender isn't gonna cut it.

Upholstery threading is sewn 4x and 5x in most critical seems. They also include military grade straps to hang the bags while they drain. Military grade eyelets are rated for 6084 pounds. Hooks & D-rings are the same type that paratroopers would use in their gear. The fabric is PVC lined with heat fused nylon. This prevents any loss of material. The screen is a high pressure rated screen used in commercial applications that require high pressure water treatments.

Once you try this It's pretty hard to turn back.

Don't use a blender. I've done that same tek a few times, and it is good for a beginner to use. You'll get the best results just shaking the buds in a jar of ice-water, no leaf particles to filter and separate. Pick up a gasoline/chemical siphon from the automotive section, it's a small hand-pump that works great for pulling the top layer off without disurbing the bottom.

This is what the blender supernatent looks like.

And the final goodies.

I've tried the technique and it works pretty good. I got 1.3g of hash from 20g of trimmings.
The hash looks pretty green but it's very potent. I didn't use a metal coffee filter. I used a plastic one.
I'll post some pics tomorrow.

I'll also try your shaking with stones technique. Would glass marbles work?

I think the blender works fine. I can't shake the buds in a jar because I'm not using the buds, only the trim. Using the buds seems wasteful to me.
Just shaking the buds would only release the outer trichomes, wouldn't it?

Should have clarified.... I never used this tek with buds, just trim, and the blender still isn't necessary. Your results are much better than mine, 60gm of leaves yielded just over 2gm of hash, but it's a mostly blonde colour with minimal green on the top.

Any pics yet??

Here is a picture. The hash is in the foreground, the pile in the back was the second wash of the same material, but that came out really green.
You can also see the filter I used for the first step of the tek and a match for scale.

1.How dry is dry enough for hash making weed?
2.Using a basic Iso-Lator (2 bag) type how much hash can one expect from a 60g "bud-stick" plant?

1. What do you mean by how dry is enough? I dried the hash on a radiator until it was dry.
2. The site of the tek I used says you can get around 6-20g from 200g dried skuff.

Oh, about a week, until it feels dry.
But this tek would probably work just as well with wet material because it goes into the blender anyway.

Yeah O.K, I've got A "Soft Secrets" article about the guy who was producing "Ice Cream". Whilst I dig it out can anyone tell me a decent techniques for removing henna from good hash (Don't it make you puke? Hopefully they don't do this in The States)? I may start a seperate thread on this if I don't get any interest here.

I found this should help.

Well, it's not that easy, but you can try this if your stash is bad enough:

In a saucepan, boil up a small amount of water (perhaps to a depth of 2 cm or so).

Add your yucky sample of crap soap

Simmer gently and crush the hash block

The water will more than likely turn yellow, maybe due to the henna (or worse) dissolving out.

When the hash has all powdered up, drain the water off and put the remaining powder onto kitchen paper towels to dry out.

As cannabis oils are not soluble in water so the potency of what you have won't be too badly damaged and given what comes off it's said to be well worth it (although to be fair this is no way to treat good hash!). You'll also have a lot smaller stash at the end of this though. Of course, we can't promise this will always work, but UKCIA has heard of good results.

Don't just hope for a change soon, help bring it about.
