My new ferret.

My new ferret, Rogue (as the shroomery helped us name her) is awesome!  Some of you may have seen the thread I made when we first got her 2 weeks or so ago, but here it is

I've been doing a lot of reading about her type of ferret, which is called a Blaze ferret as I mentioned in my prior post.  These types of ferrets often have something called Waardenburg Syndrome, which causes deafness.  After reading about some of the "signs" that a deafferret exhibits, I decided to do some of the tests that I found online.  Tests included taking a squeaky toy and hiding it behind your back, squeaking it and looking for a reaction, snapping your fingers behind the ferrets head and looking for a reaction, and taking a jar full of food/change/whatever and shaking it sharply behind the ferret when it wasn't paying attention and watching to see if it flinches/jumps.  We tried all of the tests, and little Rogue is apparenlty 100% deaf!

Luckily, it doesn't slow her down at all.  if anything, it's the opposite.  Deaf ferrets are often mute as well, but not her - she's the other end of the spectrum.  She's LOUD as hell, because she can't hearhow loud she's being. Deaf ferrets also apparently like to swim, which she does, as well as bite, because they don't realize they're biting hard, because they can't hear you reprimand them, or cry out in pain.  Luckily we've trained her not to bite already, and she's making great progress with that.  Now all we have to do is train her to come to a certain smell, or a light, instead of a noise.  I guess in retrospect it didn't matter much what we named her, since she can't hear it anyways, but I still love the name Rogue, so whatever! :tongue: 

We got the 3 of our critters a new crate because my psycho fiancee apparently felt like they needed a living area the size of a small country.  The cage is called "ferret nation", and that's a pretty good name for it, because it's fucking huge.  But it's an awesome crate and they seem to really like it :smile:

I'm going to post some pictures in this thread later on of our little deaf ferret, as well as their new habitat that has taken over our bedroom :smirk:  Just wanted to give you all a lesson on deaf ferrets and keep you posted on our precious fuzzies.  :heart:

Compare them to cats if you don't mind, are they calm?(in general) and affectionate?? My GF wanted to get one, and I said no way,...
because A. I have some preconceived notions about them, and B. We already have 3 cats!!

I loved it when you compared one of your ferrets to those stupid kids with the spiky hair, that was priceless :lol:

Hmm.  Compared to cats - ferrets sleep most of the day, but they do need at least 2-3 hours of "play time" out of their crate.  they play with a lot of similar toys that cats do actually, balls with bells in them, strings, etc.  They have different personalities, just like cats do, some are calm, some are spazzes!  A lot of that has to do with their age, too.  our oldest one, Hero, is 3 and she's very calm, but her former owner told us that she had pretty much always been like that.  Villain is a maniac, he's a little over 1.  Rogue is about 4 months or so and she's also a spaz.  Ferrets can be pretty cuddly, as long as they're handled from a fairly young age and arent mistreated.  If you keep them locked in a crate for 3 days straight and then want to take them out and cuddle with them, you're going to have a ferret that wants nothing to do with you until it gets all of that pent up energy out of its system - you follow?  We typically let ours run around for a few hours, and then go in and play with them when they've burned off some steam and explored.  they're very, very curious, and will get into ANYTHING left within their range (and even some things you think are out of range).  Most people's preconceived notions are that they smell, and that they're gross.  Neither is true if you taker proper care of them.  They are easily litter box trained (like a cat) and love to play (like a cat).  Some ferrets are more affectionate than others, and if you're a 1st time ferret owner, you should probably consider adopting one that is no longer a baby, out of its nipping stage, and used to being handled.  :smile:  Hope that helps!  I love my ferrets, and I've had cats and can honestly say ferrets are more fun to watch and play with :thumbup:

Oooooh I loooooove ferrets!  I had some a few years ago, 2 males: Ndugu and Ali Baba.  Even though I had great fun with them, I had to sell them because they were stinking up my mom's house and digging up her carpet.  Luckily I found some new owners that were already very knowledgeable about them, and already owned 3 other happy little weasles.  Looking forward to your pics of Rogue!

Ooh and Psilo, they are like kittens, energetic and playful, always up to something, and very affectionate (atleast the two I had were).  I had a cat also, and the cat had tons of fun playing with the ferrets, although if your cats are older the ferrets might just get on their nerves...  If you get one though, you'll probably end up getting a second. :lol: Thats just kindof how it works

cool, i've always wanted a ferret but don't know much about them. they do sound similar to cats. why are they kept in a cage most of the day though? can't you just let them roam free around the house? or are they always getting into trouble because of their curiousity?

...and a 3rd, and a 4th...they're very social, so it's good for them to have at least 1 buddy :thumbup:  Too many people though, view them as disposable pets, like a hampster or something that you'll have for 2 years.  Ferrets can live up to 10 years and need lots of attention, where cats are pretty self sufficient as long as you feed them and give them water.  A ferret left in its crate alone for any length of time by itself would become really depressed.

That's pretty much the problem.  Any room youlet them run free in has to be ferret proof.  As in, no wires, no holes, nothing for them to get stuck under...they'll get into ANYTHING, and some can even fit under doors so you have to be careful about that too :tongue:  Also, their metabolisms are VERY high, so when they need to go to the bathroom, they NEED to go right then!  They usually just pick the closets corner they can back into and go, so you should have litter boxes around their play areas so one is readily available when they need it.  I mean, I know of people who have let their ferrets run free around the house, but sometimes it ends badly - for example, a ferrey crawling under the dishwasher, getting INTO the dishwasher, and the dishwasher being turned on without the owners knowing it was in there, or a ferret gettick crushed under a recliner in a couch, or stepped on because they get under foot.  Plus, like I said, they sleep for the vast majority of the day, and they like to do so in hammocks, in a dark place.  Hence the crate :smile:

i think that's because ferrets are nocturnal creatures. I had a friend who had about 8 ferrets and they all slept during the day. I loved picking em up when they were sleeping, they're like limp noodles and no matter how hard you try they keep on sleeping or just open a lazy eye to look at you for a second before crashing out again.

And my main preconceived notion was that they are not very friendly, at least not nearly as friendly as cats, but that sort of attitude usually came from people that also thought ferrets were "gross" just as you said actually. :smile:

Coda, yeah, they are nocturnal, but when you sleep like 19 hours a day I guess it doesn't matter much *when* you sleep :lol:  I don't think cats sleep quite that much, although they might :shrug:

Yeah,gizmo is younger...the other one is skylar who is a bit older than giz.I just took those pics an hour ago too ha...they scratched the hell out of my skins and pissed on my jacket...o well.

Rogue is beautiful! We really need to get our buddy Merlin a friend to hang out with, since Dainty passed away awhile back. There was a really cool ferret at Petco, from what my girlfriend said, and when we were both in there shopping for a cockatiel home, he was still there, but they were basically in quarantine at the time (just as well, since I couldn't really afford to get a ferret then).

I did pick Merlin up a hanging hammock/sack that he loves. :grin:
