now this isnt to say their arent a few gems laying outside these years.. i just pretty much wont listen to anything else. now jgb on the other hand, has some brilliant stuff recorded in the early 80s. for some reason even though jerry's voice was really starting to get bad with the dead he could still pull it together and belt em out with the JGB. recently ive been checking out a bunch of earlier dead...pigpen era. i honestly think some of jerry's best guitar work came out of this early LSD/ psychedelic era. the days of the band dropping acid were long gone by the mid to later 70s. it really sucks pigpen had to go so soon too. the dead lost alot of that blues influence when he went. some of his stuff is just sooo fucking amazing. id take pig over shreaking donna anyday. :gd_icon:

great years for the dead, i'd expand it from 69-72 though. also, if you're only listening to those years you're going to be missing out on brent. i cant really say what specific 80s years i recommend, as i only have the best of the best of the shows from the 80s. and yea, pig pen was the man. many of his tunes are my favorites.

ive listened to plenty of brent...i guess it was ok his playing was much better than the final year or so of keith. i didnt like him singing over jerry sometimes. IMO i think a lot of dead heads hold the brent era so dear is because its the only one they were able to experience live.

I'm fittin to get my JGB fix. I need the jerry tunes in the bloodstream. Just downloaded that 8 disc jerry mix, and it's doin pretty good, but i know there's some jerry out there i havent got to yet.

Early dead is my favorite, 69-72 for sure, but i also like dipping into the raw 67-68 era as well. Some of the best stuff you'll hear.

i gave oregon state prison 82 a listen the other day  :drooling:  i love that show.

My fav years for the dead are 77/78, though there are plenty of other shows that are highlights in my collection.

you're pretty on par with that, but even the 65-68 stuff has it's place

I pretty much despise the 80s-90s sets and stick with the first 12-14 years

i agree, it's definetly something you have to get used to... I still only mildly like brent, but sometimes he'd be able to pull off some really good stuff.

I totally agree, I think the band as a whole (fingers on a hand) was at its best during that period

Donna was alright, but Pigpen  :lighter: he had SOUL!

oregon state prison is fucking awesome!!!! the show is worth it for the rubin & cherise alone...i must have listened to that track 700 times :gd_icon:  the dire wolf is a stand out from that set too. i wish they would have gone into a candyman in that set...candyman performed acoustically pwnz.

as far as early dead i fudged up and should have had it 69-72. i think the best hard to handle EVER came out of 72. ive been really getting into my "complete filmore west 1969" 3 disc...ya know the extended version of Live/Dead released in 05. its really great, groundbreaking shit. only complaint i have is some of tom constanten's playing...its just not on the level of the rest of the band, especially garcia who was just putting down blazing guitar riffs. i think "doin that rag" is a totally underrated tune from the early days...its such a catchy little number. awesome to hear phil and the boys play it a few times last summer.:gd_icon:

the late 60s-, say, 72 is definitely when the band was on point, enjoying themselves the most, and experimenting with various sounds that would come to categorize the various genres they played. 76 is greatly overlooked by 77, i feel - donna tended to be way on in 76, and there are some lazy>supplications that are soul-shaking from summer 76. 77, of course, is world renowned. for me, though, 80s dead with brent is definitely the best. starts with the late-fall/winter 1980 tour with acoustic first sets, electric second (and third) sets. i drool for those 80s shows where you can tell jerry & brent had their eyes locked on one-another throughout the whole show; listening to a good built to last makes my spine tingle. 90s seemed to really be hit or miss, and you could tell the whole band wasn't really into it as they were in the early 70s. but if i had to pick one keyboardist/dead era to listen to for the rest of time, it'd definitely be brent/the 80s. used to find it so damn cheesy; nowadays i'll blast we can run and sing at the top of my lungs - people in the lane next to me looking all strangely be damned!
