Flies that live and breed in soil?
    #640776 - 05/22/02 06:49 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I'm having a fly problem in my soil. These tiny flies breed in soil and seem to feed off it. The only thing i've found to combat them was an insecticidal soap, but they always come back in a few days. Even with repeated treatments of the insecticidal soap. The spray is safe for edible vegetables and it also does not harm any of my various plants in anyway.

Has anyone else had experience with these 'lil fiends? I'd like to find a better and more permanent solution. Thanks!

The soap works well. Another thing that will work is to take some fresh garlic cloves, grind them up in a food processor, and dump them into a spray bottle of water. Spray that all over your soil, and it will keep bugs and rodents away from your soil for a longer period than the soap. Most animals hate garlic, and it takes a few weeks for it to break down in the soil.

You should maybe try some Camphor in the soil, and then alongside your problem keep a bowl out with bleach water. My deck harvests all the evil mosqitoes to drink, and they all die in the bleach water! That should maybe do the trick.

to that garlic concoction, add some ground cayenne pepper. freshly pureed cayenne would be best....

vinegar would lower the ph of soil...which isn't good.

Yes indeed. Don't use vinegar. I started using the garlic method several weeks ago, and I have no more bugs, and more importantly, the squirrels have stopped digging around in my planters. Over 2 1/2 weeks on one garlic water treatment. Next time I will try it with pepper.

When a population thrives, other populations rise to check it... This is self-evident, and you don't see the world three inches deep with grasshoppers, birds eat them. (well, this doesn't make sense with the human example) Anyway, my point is, when you have a pest, there will be a predator available to put the pest into check. If you can find that perdator, then your solid....

Right now the flies are in cactus soil of some ungerminated cacti seedlings. Are you sure this garlic mix will not harm my unborn seeds?

I don't know for certain that garlic won't harm ungerminated seeds. Garlic is mildly acidic, but I doubt it would hurt them.
What I would do would be to grind up one clove of carlic VERY fine, mix it into the largest spray bottle you have, and lightly spray the top of your cactus mix. The scent of the garlic will be there, and that is what the flies hate, but it won't be enough acidity to affect the seeds themselves.

Uno, how'd it go with the garlic/pepper water? Has it been working for you?
I have tweaked my recipie. What I started doing is using garlic powder instead of fresh garlic. That way, you don't have the hastles of grinding it so fine, and the powder disolves in the water, so you don't have to worry about chunks of fresh garlic clogging up the plastic tube in your sprayer. The powder seems to work just as well as fresh.
