PERLITE (in a casing layer)

The CASING LAYER above is a mixture (by volume) of:

5 parts course vermiculite.
3 parts perlite (treated -> see note)
1 part hydrated coir.
1 part oyster shell flour

NOTE: 1/2 the volume of perlite used.
Was ground to a chunky flour consistency in a food processor.
Then, remixed the the chunky perlite.

I have been tinkering with trying to find a "casing" mixture.
That, requires no pH adjustment.
(other than long term & could even be omitted))

As pH adjustment of peat is where many novices FAIL. :mad2:

I am not aware of any of the numerous casing mixture recipes.
That contain PERLITE:

Researching the properties of perlite.
I found this information.

Water retention by horticultural perlite is not an indiscriminate action.

The amount of water adsorbed on the surface of perlite particles
is a function of the particle size distribution.


Coarser perlite particles holds less water than finer particles.

Thus, by adjusting the range of particle size employed.

The amount of moisture retained can be regulated to suit particular requirements.


Given that fact.

I decided to try perlite in a casing mixture.

I also included "coir" for this reason.
Coir will colonize rapidly.
Which should bring mycelium to the casing layer surface rapidly.
(CAC'ing effect)

I first hydrated the coir.
So, the volumes would be equal.

Then, added all ingredients.
Measured with a measuring cup.

Then continued to hydrate the mixture.
Until is would pass a hand "squeeze" test.
Meaning, when you pick up a handful, it doesn't drip.
And, when you give it a firm gentle squeeze, it does drip.
(drip, not pour out)

I then bagged up the mixture.
(plastic bag)
Used a rubber band to close the bag.
(not so tight, steam cannot escape)
Nuked the bag 3 times, for 5 minutes.
(flipping between each sequence)

Then, sealed the bag tight & cooled overnight.

Casing layer was applied to a colonized tray, today.

Now this looks like perlite has potential to work as a casing layer.  Given that you put it in a food processor.... thats probably just about the only way it would work correctly.  I want to see these results :smile:.    Afaof has 6 chillin right now with verm / peat casing layer that he just cased 2 days ago...  cant wait for some of those :smile:

Perlite works excellent in a casing layer in the large, course size. It works not by holding water, but by preventing clumping and providing lots of air pockets in the layer itself, which stimulates primordia. By mixing perlite with vermiculite, you get the best of both worlds. . .moisture retention in the verm, and air retention in the perlite. Ph balancing isn't necessary unless you add peat, which isn't absolutely required for cubes. Just don't try to grow agaricus or other edibles without peat in the mix, because they won't pin.

Exactly. All peat does in our case (cubies) is provide structure it has little to do with moisture holding capabilities. Reiterate course size is where you want to be with perlite. :thumbup:

I did this by mistake the very first casing I made.

I used Peat and Perlite. It worked extremely well actually. But I switched to Verm. as is suggested. Mabey Ill go back and play with that mistake some more.

I have used perlite (by itself) as well as verm/perlite 50/50 as a casing material. In my experience the perlite tray I made grew better than the verm ones. From experience perlite stimulated pinning. I found this out by mistake. One time some perlite accidentally fell onto a peat casing with rye grain. Days later (when it pinned) i noticed that the pins has all started where the perlite had fell and that they were in high numbers.

  Recently I took a jar that i had used for a grain to grain tek which still had some colonized grains at the bottom (about 1/3 pint of colonized grain) i dumped perlite in the jar, misted the perlite and closed the jar. Days later i had many pins and i will probably yield 7-8 grams(first flush) having used a minimal amount of colonized grain. Perlite HAS potential as a casing!
