birthing my cakes

Okay, this morning I finally got around to birthing my cakes. I made a terrarium consisting of a clear rubbermaid container and a plexiglass dripshield. I put perlite in a strainer and let water from the tap run over it. I shook out the excess and made a 1" layer on the bottom. I put in three of my cakes that already had little baby shoooms growing. On two of the cakes, there were approximately 6-7 1 inch long shrooms with little red caps growing from the top. They had wrapped themsleves around the edge of the jar so they look pretty funny. Some of them are very bluish colored. At first glance, a n00b like me would probably suspect contamination. But I remember the term "blueing". I don't have a pic so I'm just trying to explain it as best I can. But does this indeed sound like "blueing" ? There is no odd color on the cake itself, just the shrooms growing at the top. On some of them, the entire stem all the way up to the cap is a dark color. Much like you'd expect a bruise on your arm to look. Will the babies that grew smashed against the glass recover okay ? I tried to get as much vermiculite off the top as possible without penetrating down into the cake. Will fruiting go right though the last bit, or should I scrape it "clean" ? Thanks for any pointers.

I forgot to mention, I did not detect any foul odors upon opening the jars. It smelled like very pungent mushroom.

I've had shrooms start growing in the jar before birthing and it seems that those shrooms did not recover or grow any further....the cakes however were fine and produced some nice specimens.

PGF - Would you recommend harvesting the little ones that got a head start ? I worry about them. They start at the top of the cake and just sort of wrap around the edge, not protruding at all. Glad to hear the cake still turned out okay.

Were they smashed up against the jar? Are they pretty thin? Personally, I would go ahead and take them off to make room for bigger shrooms.
Maybe someone else can shed some light on it....

Yes some were smashed against the glass, others grew up through the dry vermiculite layer. Each cake has a mass of little shrooms growing from the top. Most not more than an inch long and around a 1/4 inch across. If they are stunted from being locked up in the jar I would rather just get them out of the way. Thanks again.
