Why doesn't the fungus spread more than this? (picture)

Every time I have tried cultivate cubensis it ends up like this:

The fungus covers the top of my rice but only a bit down in the jar. It then stops growing (usually when it has spread as much as in the picture). What am I doing wrong? Even if I wait longer it doesn't grow further down.

Could the rice be too wet? The last time I cocked the rice a shorter time but it still ended up like in the picture.

Could it be that the fungus needs more oxygen? (I have a hole in the lids that are covered with plaster that "breathes")

your using brown rice jsut strait? Normally it isnt dont that way but your getting decent growth why dont you try shaking the jars to spread the myciuium around it wont hurt it. Make sure it at around 80 give or take 5 degrees. Sometimes they reach a barrier like lack of moister or contams but in your case I would say just shake it or mix it somehow and it will turn out.

Those should be mixed. You will see much more activity then.

Colonization will stop for one of three reasons:

1. it reaches contaminated substrate material

2. it can't breathe.

3. it was exposed to excessive temperatures (in excess of 105) and is now dead.

my bet is #2. can't see your lids there, but if they're sealed shut, that's your problem. there's dozens of ways to design a filter that's both breathable but keeps contaminates out. you need to use one such design.

shaking them would re-distribute the mycelium and allow it to colonize quicker, though if your jars are sealed shut it isn't going to help, they've already used up the air. (edit: i just noticed you mentioned there are holes covered in plaster? i dont know of any plaster that's "breathable".... doesn't sound right)

all that aside, whole rice grains are an extremely poor choice. i'd do a little more research and consider following an established tek word for word next go around.
