Mycelium not spreading on casing?????
    #1852308 - 08/26/03 07:46 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Okay so here is the deal, I have cased with vermiculite some of my cakes. It seems that the mycelium has stopped growing through the vermiculite and it doesn't appear to be spreading like it should. I'm worried that it may be too dry. I have many contrasting opinions and I am not sure if I would drown the mycelium by spraying it with a spray bottle on the vermiculite or if it would be okay so that it could grow more. HELP!!!!!

Indirectly spray it down if you think its dry. Don't mess with it too much. It's probably ok, but you are fretting too much.

It could be too wet also. It's sort of hard to tell the moisture content of straight verm, that's why I always recommend making a proper 50/50 with peat moss. It's better to have it slightly dryer than too wet.

spray your hands with Lysol or wear pre-sterilized gloves... Pick up some of the verm. u used to case.... Squeeze it a little with your fingers... If it leaves a moist feeling, it's not dry... Just be patient. Fruits are on the way... If it doesn't, follow Zwieback0's post.... Even if it's too weti it'll fruit... Just after the excess water is evaporated....
