Plaster of Paris as Gypsum. Cancer warning?
    #1135517 - 12/12/02 12:05 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I am posting out of concern raised by a warning on this product:

"WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer."

One may also note that Plaster of Paris contains calcium sulphate, calcium carbonate, and crystalline silica. Which of these chemicals is the cancer agent?

I've read many posts suggesting Plaster of Paris as a source of Gypsum, calcium sulphate. Hopefully nobody is being indirectly harmed due to the use of this product.

I have searched the forums for Plaster of Paris and found no thread regarding whether or not it may be dangerous.

Of the ingredients listed in Plaster of Paris the warning most likely pertains to crystalline silica which is in clay and acts as a drying agent. Like clay plasters that contain crystalline silica can be inhaled if you are not wearing the appropriate breathing apparatus. I remember when we where working with dry clay models in sculpture class the teacher warned us that inhaling silica dust causes silicosis and cancer because it is like inhaling glass. The same is true about asbestos and perlite (white volcanic glass). When you inhale crystalline silica the lymph cells of the immune system ingest the piece of glass lodged in the lungs and a sac is formed where the glass is housed in the body. As far as I know its fucking impossible to hock that shit up because it becomes attached to tissue in silicosis, and so it is a cancer causing hazard for this reason, like asbestos. So as long as you are not breathing the fine floaty glass dust. But none of those are toxic as far as I know. Calcium carbonate is like, baking soda or something fine. It should be cool, just wet it down while your working with it that is the primary hazard.

sodium bicarbonate is baking soda.

calcium carbonate is limestone.

it sounds like you got lime plaster. pure plaster of paris is merely the hemihydrate of gypsum.

find some pure plaster of paris that doesn't have any other bullshit in it, wet it, let it dry, then crush it up.

you're better off springing for a bag of gypsum or busting a hole in your drywall, though.

You're not supposed to use plaster of paris.  Use gypsum.  It should be in every garden center.  If not, get a sheet of drywall at the lumber yard, and smash it up to use.
