Spreading spores in nature
    #2300561 - 02/04/04 02:26 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Hey, I was wondering if there's any point to making your own apore prints and then going and distributing those spores in nature. I live in South Carolina where, although not tropical, the weather is warm and humid for many months of the year. What do you all think about this idea? Would they be likely to grow? Where should I aim to distribute them for best growth chances?

I don't know, but my theory would be to take the spore print and dump it into a spray bottle full of water and mist optimal growing areas. Never tried it so I don't know if it'll work.

Sounds like a good idea. Keep in mind that I'm not really counting on reaping anything. I was just wondering if you all thought if I had the available spores, if it might be a good idea. Or is it just dumb?

I had almost the same idea... I guess this summer I'll be
going to do that in France

i have actually inoculated patties before with a spore solution...i know this may sound crazy, but, i shot up two patties, one that was not producing already, and one that was. the one that wasnt producing kept not producing...the onw that WAS already producing increased in number of flushes, AND in quantity per flush.

any spore stains you see around your grow space, you can wipe them up with your hat or some other piece of clothing... then when you go outside, you are always trailing a stream of spores...

sc should work fine for spreading it.
someone once suggested taking a two liter or two (w prints in em), filling em with water, then poking small holes and walking around a pasture...
you should wait till like may though.

Why all the suggestions about getting the spores wet? I realize the need when inncoulating your own jars and stuff, but in nature, wouldn't it be better to distribute them dry, like the shroom does and let the rains hyrdate them?

water is a good tool for measuring.
eg a print in a 2 liter could be spread out over a lot larger area
then if one were to say
take a print out on a windy day
and blow on it or whatever.

That's a good point, but I think you could get around it with the earlier idea of spreading spores on your clothing and letting them fall off (running and dooing cart-wheels throught a field or something--probably most fun if you've just eaten too!).

I guess my main concern is if you get the spores wet and they hit the ground but they're not ready to colonise yet, will they die b/c they've been wet down? Or will they simply dry back out and colonise the next time they get wet and the other conditions are right. How resiliant are these little mind-eggs anyway?

my only problem with spreading the spores on yr clothing (which honestly i have never heard of before mikeological) is that there is no way to control when/where they drop off...
for instance, if you took all the spores that had dropped from yr mature shrooms and put them on yr pants, they would (hypothetically) drop off as you walked out the front door, and then they would continue to drop off every time you moved or got hit by moving air...
they would be hard to contain to an area that had the potential for actually bearing shrooms.
spores/spore prints/spore syringes are hella resiliant...if you look in the grow log forum you can see a thread about a fella using a 5 yr old print to grow...
if you waited until the proper time to spread these spores (ie april-may) i can't imagine any problems as far as the viability of the spores.

actually the idea came directly from terrence mckenna... you're right, there is no way to control it, the spores just drop off where they will...

Would a liquid inoculum work for something like this?

I've done some experimenting recently on spreading spore, I've used a syringe and innoculated clumps of moss growing outdoors, My theory is the soil under the moss is prime as well as moss will keep in the moisture/humidity. I've also planted left over bit's of spawn from my casings, small 1/4 inch flat pieces. I simply pull back some moss and place it underneath then put the moss back. I only did this about 4 days ago so I'll keep you posted.

As far as I know the cow must consume the spores, which germinate in its stomach so the mycelium is already off by the time it is out onto the field.

MJ might be able to clarify that. Everybody think about him and I'm sure he'll appear.
