Cyanescens Vs. Cyanescens. Pics!!

If you guys were to make a lc with one of these specimens pictured below which would it be. This would be started with wild spores, and assuming it doesn't contaminate, used for spreading this out in some local wood chips.

My concern is that one specimen was very hardy but didn't show great cyan characteristics. The other had the characteristics but wasn't as hardy. The hardy one was growing on wood chips and the better looking one was growing from grass/cellulose debris. I would think that going from spores would offer enough genetic diversity that it shouldn't matter but what do you guys think?

I think that is a substrate effect actually!

I have a tiny cyan patch, and my cat in spring threw out some woodchips. Guess what: the tossed-away woodchips produced little uglies looking like your hardy's but the main patch produced gorgeous caramel capped cyans like your beauties.
And thats from one specific clone of cyanescens!

I think that if they grew the other way around, they'd look like the other.

Are those red chips at all good btw? It looks almost dyed :crazy:
To me the choice is clear: take both!

If you GOT to choose then go with the hardy ones. It's better to be high on a hardy one that isn't pretty than to be sober on a pretty one which didn't grow.

In its spores, your hardy ones will have prettier and uglier varieties. Survival is everything, aesthetics comes second.

I like to remind you of roses!
Roses were selectively bred for aesthetics for centuries. The result is that there now are beautiful flowers, but the plants have almost no resistance to climate, diseases and insects. If we had settled for walnut-sized roses on a strong plant, the species would've been better off. Dogs - same story.

If you choose superior survival characteristics, the species benefits, and in time it will show  :thumbup:


Would you want a super pretty girlfriend who does little more than manicure and break nails, or a goodlooking girlfriend who'll also haul 50lbs sacks of woodchips for your Cyans? :wink:

they are diead. They are fir chips that are died red and i saw some dark brown ones today. It seems to be the new thing around ehre and its a good thing for mushrooms because the cyans/azures love wood chips.

I notice its the uglies that grow in the dyed chips, whereas the pretty ones grow in a more organic setting.

I have no facts, but personally I think that that's a chemical dye they're using in that mulch. It's very red and stays very red despite weather influences (they do it here too) which usually means its a synthetic dye. Perhaps your uglies are less ugly on more natural chips.

And fir.. isn't wood of Conifers less suitable for woodlovers than hardwood, generally? If it works it works, but I thought that Conifer wood generally is detrimental to growth, and that too can account for them being ugly ducklings.

the stuff is made from douglas fir, the left over stuff from the mills. Douglas fir is one of the one stamets recomends.
I have noticed fibs growing on these chips and they dont seem to be affected by the dye. I will get some pics this weekend
