I personally like the volcano episode. It went along well with Discovery's I shouldn't be Alive episode.

he tells you it's safe to eat things that aren't safe to eat. things that cause vomiting and diarrhea are not the types of things that are going to help you survive in the wild.

that one where he was talking about milk of magnesia for stomach cramps. it's a laxative. you don't want to drink laxatives when you're stuck in the jungle cuz you will just get more dehydrated.

and he's always jumping down hills and shit. why is he telling people to do that?

Watch. Learn. Survive.

I've actually learned several potentially life-saving tricks and techniques from both shows. They're both bad-asses.

I hope these shows don't actually convince people to go out into the wild and try any of these things.

Glad I was raised able to camp/hunt for myself.

For someone to actually believe anything on TV is actually real, thats just being naive.

well personally I tend too thnk these shows are for people to watch, and then if your unfortunate to be put into a survivle situation of any kind or flavor you'll think back to something like this show. Its not like "hey guys lets go get lost in the costa riiiican jungle" :P

Okay, I'll tell you my secret.

My best buddies roommate is actually a professional Survivalist.

He actually teaches survival classes in California, then takes them on week long adventures through the Sierra's.

His side business is making bows, staffs and spears from wood, flint and animal remains to keep everything together, just like the native Americans.

The funny part about this whole thing?

He taught the Survivor Man (Les Stroud) everything he knows. He (Tom) watches the show and gets his kicks because Les regurgitates all his lectures.

I've heard some stories of this Les Stroud guy, from other of these survival guys (they tend to hang out) and think that Bear is way more extreme, original, and just better for TV. Les is a little bitch.

Quote:
Bear Grylls (born Edward Michael Bear Grylls in 1974) is a best-selling author, mountaineer, TV presenter, adventurer, and international motivational speaker. A former special forces soldier, Grylls made his name when, at the age of 23, he became the youngest Briton to climb Mount Everest and return alive. He holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Commander in the British Royal Naval Reserve.

[edit] Timeline

* 1974 - Bear Grylls was born, son of Michael and Sally Grylls and younger brother of Lara Grylls.
* 1995 - Served for three years with 21st Special Air Service Regiment (Artists) (Volunteers), a special forces unit of the British Army, during which time he broke his back in three places, while parachuting over southern Africa.
* 1997 - Became the youngest British person to summit Mount Ama Dablam in the Himalayas, a peak once described by Sir Edmund Hillary as 'unclimbable'.
* 1998 - On May 26, Became the youngest British person to summit Mount Everest and return alive. His book on this expedition, titled Facing Up, reached number nine in the best seller list.
* 2000 - Married Shara Nathalie Patricia Grylls. Later that year Bear led the first team to circumnavigate the UK on jetskis, in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Lifeboats.
* 2003 - Led team across North Atlantic in a rigid inflatable boat (RIB). The book on this world record is titled: Facing the Frozen Ocean. It was shortlisted as 'Sports Book of the Year.' Along with Dame Ellen MacArthur, he was awarded an honorary commission in the Royal Naval Reserve in recognition of this achievement.
* 2005 - Led the first team ever to attempt to paramotor over the remote jungle plateaux of the Angel Falls, Venezuela, in aid of the charity 'Hope & Homes for Children'. The team were attempting to reach the highest, most remote high tepuis, made famous by Conan Doyle's 'Lost World'.
* 2005 - Bear broke the world record for the highest ever open air dinner party [1], slung under a hot air balloon at 25,000 ft. Details of this adventure, in celebration of 50 years of The Duke of Edinburgh charity Award scheme.
* 2005 - During July, Channel 4 aired Escape to the Legion, a four-part documentary series following Bear & 11 volunteers over the course of a month in North Africa as they endured a course based on the basic training of the French Foreign Legion to find out "what kind of men [they] really [were]". The show was co-produced and presented by Grylls.
* 2006 - The show Man vs. Wild premiered, the host of which was Grylls, yet most of the scenes are staged and contain advice deemed dangerous by most survival experts

What has that Les Stroud douchebag done with his life?

I think people just need to see these shows for what they are ...entertainment. Being an avid survivalist myself (I've studied the subject for 10-12yrs along with 5 years of army infantry training) I find that there is good info on both shows. The problem is that they don't really show the whole picture. All their advice is very tv oriented. It's all about entertainment and anyone who thinks they can watch those shows and all of a sudden they're freakin Croc Dundee better make sure they have their affairs in order and a next of kin named.
