I'm willing to bet that there is no information saying this giant fish could do what it did in the documentary (climb out of the water, walk around with it's flippers, attack a giant amphibian, craw back into the water). Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the animal.
Also does fossil evidence show that these animals made any sound at all? How does fossil evidence show what their mating ritual were? It's a made up fantasy with some truth here and there, yet nowhere do they say this.
Hey I'm not willing to sit down and be force fed pure shit and then say it's great. I guess that makes me abnormal, huh?

I'm sure there is a good amount of shit they just pulled out of their ass, but usually it's not entirely unreasonable. As I said, the mating dance could probably be determined by fossilized footprints. As for the fish thing, perhaps they determined it to occupy a similar niche as orcas today. Or perhaps they found remains of these amphibians in their stomachs. Ever think of that?

adjust said: They don't even say whether it is likely or not, they just say the giant fish did this, and did that, and really they have no clue. It's just a made for tv documentary designed to keep a complete retard occupied for an hour.
It would be too boring for the average viewer if they explained why they think these animals exhibited these behaviors, and it would be too long to fill the show's timeslot. So instead, they try to present a rough picture of what they estimate the world was like back then. The Discovery Channel is not made for scientists. It's made for regular people with an interest in learning new things.
This is right on the nose.
Discovery channel is (or at least was) a way to learn while watching TV in your living room. It's great for kids normally, because it has a way with keeping a child engaged in the tv, while still teaching them. Of course this tends to only work with the nerdier kids who like science... kids like I was, with a few Science Experiment anthologies in their bookcase.
Much like books that are a good blend of escapist/interpretive elements are fun to read and yet insightful at the same time.
Overall though, I'd say I prefer PBS hands down. Public broadcasting is the shit. NOVA, Nature, Secrets of the Dead, lots of good learning going on there.
I simply do not like Antiques Roadshow though...

Well the amphibians did live in the ocean. Where the giant fish also lived.
But I see your point.
Instead of "boring" and "complicated" explanations these documentaries aim to jam pack a bunch of information into a 1-hour timeslot. With a lot of special effects and cheesy gimmicks thrown in.
Discovery channel is after all a business and they want ratings. Bottom line. Why else would they play A MALE SOAP OPERA aka BIKER BUILDOFF as thier main show everyday on primetime?
I just personally can't stand it.

Yes I love all those shows. Except antiques roadshow... but they have to pander to the 60+ audience else they'll lose like 90% of thier funding. So I can tolerate it

Shroomism said: At least the history channel deals with real documented facts, and video footage.
They also deal with ancient tribes and cultures with no written record. The Celts, for example. Or the people who built Stonehenge. Don't think for a second that human history doesn't involve a lot of guesswork too.
Usually they have art work and some written doccuments to form theorys from.
Dolphins in SC and Georgia marshes are known to throw fish up on land and eat from there.

No I don't like the discovery chanel anymore. Although Going tribal is cool. I was just saying marine animals are capapble of going up on land, but I really don't believe the could walk on fins and do some of the other crazy shit that they show.

I remember A&E used to be good - like 10 years ago. Then it all become just all murder mystery stuff from the 80s. I guess that's arts and entertainment? Anyways, I dont have cable and am never watched by the giant eyeball anymore, so whatever.

But they have to do a lot of filling in the blanks, just as they do with the fossil record on these Discovery Channel shows.

Any type of "educational programming" is a total joke. Have you ever really retained any educational information you've heard on tv (more than just a fact or two)? I don't know about you but I find it really difficult to digest the facts they spew out because the pace of the shows is so fast. They pile on bits of information one after another without leaving anytime to digest or review what has been said. That way after watching an hour show on WWII or whatever it might be, I haven't actually retained a single thing even though lots of facts were presented.
At least if I read about this stuff I can pause and think about the material or reread parts I find interesting so they're committed to memory but with TV that isn't possible.
