It depends if I'm really interested or not. I don't think it's that much different than reading retention. The difference is that usually when you read the quality of the information is better, so there are more facts available.

Mythbusters absolutely rocks. No, it's not all very scientifically sound, but it's both fascinating and entertaining. I agree about the crappy "documentaries" though, and I don't much like Discovery's obvious pro-war/pro-military slant.

TheDude said: Any type of "educational programming" is a total joke. Have you ever really retained any educational information you've heard on tv (more than just a fact or two)? I don't know about you but I find it really difficult to digest the facts they spew out because the pace of the shows is so fast. They pile on bits of information one after another without leaving anytime to digest or review what has been said. That way after watching an hour show on WWII or whatever it might be, I haven't actually retained a single thing even though lots of facts were presented.
At least if I read about this stuff I can pause and think about the material or reread parts I find interesting so they're committed to memory but with TV that isn't possible.
The old Discovery channel is the primary reason for my constant 1-upping of science teachers as a child... reading helped, but watching 2 to 5 hours of educational TV per day was mostly to blame. But then again, I dont know what it's like nowadays.
PBS is just the shit though.
I have a pretty face paced mind, so when I read I cant stand that my reading pace forces me to wait in between facts, but when presented with an audiovisual production containing entertainment interwoven with learning at a decent pace, I enjoy it and retain quite a bit. Many mongols, for example, have been found to be descendants of what is beleived to be the real culture that we know of as the amazon warrior women. normal highland mongol parents had a light skinned, blonde, blue eyed little girl... which, assuming mendelian genetics is correct, means that (since blue eyes and blonde hair are recessive genes) both of her parents had ancestry in a european race, which was connected to the amazons.

Yes I know(I actually thought of that also). I disagree with fish being able to do it. Whenever I take fish out of the water for more than a couple of seconds they start to like gag..
