preparing straw with detergent
    #617486 -

on page 190 of Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms Stametes suggests a methods of preparing straw using detergent to kill off any competitive contaminates, then just draining the water off and spawning the straw.

For anyone familiar with this method, i.e. have used it before. What is its success ratio? Does it pose any major risks to the colonizing mycelium? I'm curious about trying this method, and I'm looking for some feedback first.

Haven't used the detergent method. I have added bleach at Stamets' percentage to my straw pasteurization and also used a overnight soak in a water bleach bath as per Stamets for my wood chips with excellent results. No contams and healthy crops.

Can you elaborate on the bleach/water ratio? Did you pasturize or simply dunk?

Sorry I haven't replied. Been up in the ridges. Roughly the same percentage as Stamets. 50 gal water/5 cups of bleach or for the stove top 5/1. Then I pasteurize (either the barrel or the pot as the case may be for an hour or so). After pasteurizing I drain and cool (overnight) then innoculate.
