Timmothy Hay instead of Straw?
    #1094463 - 11/28/02 07:47 PM (14 years, 7 days ago)

I cant find straw where I live so I went to Petco and I found some Timmothy Hay. I looked in my Mushroom cultivators book and saw that the nutritional content for Timmothy hay was about the same as wheat straw. Has any one tried using Timmothy hay instead of straw? will it work? What do you guys think?

You can also try the product Cat Country, it's made of pelletized Western Red Winter Wheat Grass.

Timothy hay contains too much nitrogen, and too many seeds. The nitrogen causes too much thermogenisis, often reaching thermal death levels of mycelium and activating thermophillic bacteria.

The seeds are seeds, just like rye or wheat. The contaminate easily, just like rye or wheat grains do. Pasteurization is rarely an effective treatment for them, therefore high contamination rates for those attempting to use hay.

I say get some straw from a craft store/walmart. They do have straw. they may call it hay, but it's not, it's straw. It's not green like your hay is.

I had no idea walmart and craft stores carried straw. Where would I find the straw in the craft section or the gardening section? How does it come packaged?

There in "compressed" (but really just packed) Mini bales, There called mini bales. They sell the timothy hay in the rabbit section.

Hay is usually a type of straw that has more seeds in it. For us, that means more nitrogen leading to increased thermogenisis and a harder substrate to sterilize/pasteurize. For farmers or pet owners, hay has more nutrients for the animals. Yes, there is a big difference. You can use about 20% hay to 80% straw with the hope of upping the nutrition base without drastically risking contam, but I don't recomend it. I agree with stamets that the bulk substrate should be as contam resistant as possible, and that the nutrient supplementation is best supplied through generous use of grain spawn which is already encapsulated in mycelium and therefore protected from contams.

The walmarts have the straw in the craft section, near the floral foam, fake flowers and usually near the knitting/sewing stuff. Depending on where you live, it's called either hay or straw, but it's always straw. It costs as cheap as a dollar a bail this time of year. The craft stores like Michaels call it hay, but again it is really straw. They usually charge 4-6 bux for the large mini-bales.

The largest of the "mini-bales" measure a compressed 6"X6"X12". They are simply shrink wrapped in clear cellophane. One mini-bale is about how much straw you can easily pasteurize in a 20-22 qt. pot on your stove. 2 mini bales perfectly fills the bottom of a large 40-50 gallon rubermaid, and can yield upwards of 8 oz. if cared for properly.

Timmothy does suck, but it can work.Pick out as many seeds as you can.Cut it up and bleach it.Use a 1/2 cup of bleach for every 5 Gal. of water.Leave it for 24 hours, hang to dry for 24 hours.Dump into whatever you want and spawn

I had a straw hat kinda thing, that was actually used to put potted plants in. I filled it with colonized substrate, and it eventually colonized the straw. Got picks on an old puter if I can find it.
