Two Canada professors win right to toke up at work

Two Canada professors win right to toke up at work By Natasha Elkington
3 minutes ago

TORONTO (Reuters) - The use of medical marijuana has given two Toronto professors the right to something that many students could only dream of -- access to specially ventilated rooms where they can indulge in peace.

The two, at the esteemed University of Toronto and at York University to the north of the city, suffer from chronic medical conditions that some doctors say can be eased by smoking marijuana. They are among nearly 1,500 Canadians who have won the right to use the drug for health reasons.

Using human rights legislation, the two petitioned their employers for the right to light up in the workplace. They faced a legal struggle, but the universities eventually agreed.

"Without the medication, I am disabled and I'm not able to carry out meaningful and valuable, productive work," said York University criminology professor Brian MacLean, who suffers from a severe form of degenerative arthritis.

"It helps me to maintain my mobility as a physical problem but it also helps me to keep the pain at a distance so I can focus on my work," MacLean told Reuters.

MacLean's three-month battle to persuade York University to provide a light-up room, finally obtained this month, is short in comparison to University of Toronto philosophy professor Doug Hutchinson's year-long struggle.

"It took Professor MacLean a season, three full months, to get a similar accommodation and I believe that in Canada now, we should hope that the next person who gets the accommodation should not take more than a month," Hutchinson told Reuters.

MacLean says the three-month response time from the university put him in a vulnerable position both medically and professionally, as he smoked joints on the edge of campus, and thus on the edge of the law.

He now uses a special vaporiser that he says allows him to absorb the medical components of marijuana without the residues that come from smoking a joint.

Health Canada figures show that 1,492 people are authorised to possess marijuana for medical purposes in Canada, although it's not clear how the law on using the drug tallies with Ontario provincial legislation that bans smoking in the workplace.

Canada, where laws on possession of marijuana are much less tough than those in the United States, has allowed the use of marijuana for medical purposes since 2001.

The government grows the drug in part of a zinc mine in Flin Flon, Manitoba, and sells it to authorised users at C$5 ($4.40) a gram.

It's probably pretty good too... Good for them, and great for the advancement of marijuana decriminalization!

I've read a few articles months ago that gave testimonials from Canadian users that were receiving their cannabis from the Canadian government that was grown in that mine. They said it was some of the worst shit they've ever smoked and $5 a gram is nowhere near worth it. A few of them said they would rather pay high prices and risk legal action to get their bud from their former supplier(s) than smoke the government's bud.

I'll try to dig up the articles but probably won't have any luck.

no shit?!

Wow... I guess the government fucks up everything?

If a bunch of immigrants can grow super killer weed under the radar, one would assume a fully funded government growhouse (growmine) would produce top notch bud... interesting.

Not sure about the weed from the mine, but a guy I used to know who had a card for medical weed and got it from the Cannabis Club in Toronto here, and damn - it was some fine weed. Wide selection of stuff, but on the pricey side compared to some other sources - but the quality was always very high and knocked me on my ass more than once.

It seems like it would be a no-brainer, especially for Canadians.

if mary jane were ever to become legal, we could expect the price and taxation to skyrocket.

If it became legal, price would drop considerably... It's basic economics. ANYTHING on the black market is vastly more expensive. Trust me, once Marlboro and other huge tobacco companies got "rolling" <-no pun intended, prices would go WAY down due to competition.

Plus, everyone would grow their own, so demand would also drop... forcing down prices.

yeah.

of course if it were legal, you could grow your own...

but if it were legal, to buy a pack of joints would be vastly more expensive because people could charge whatever they wanted and people would buy.

you dont see people growing tobacco in their back yard to cmoke a cig, do you?

I would definitely crap my pants if i was told that i could smoke Gov't grown weed, which is probably potent as hell, at work. and then i'd crap my pants again when they told me it was only $4.50USD/gram. go Canada!

#1. It is only expensive now because CRIMINALS can charge whatever they want. You can't go to the supermarket to buy an ounce of Miami Haze. So, the drug dealer can say, "fuck you, buy it or don't". If I COULD go to the supermarket, the drug dealer is now fucked, and can no longer charge me as much.

#2. You cannot grow tobacco in your yard... It only grows well in Virginia, North Carolina and other places where the soil and weather is perfect. Weed on the other hand grows anywhere, and it grows well.

#3. People cannot charge whatever they want... If WalMart has kine bud for $50 an ounce, other stores would be forced to lower their prices... It's called competition and it is one of the most important aspects of commerce... It's why monopolies are technically illegal.

#4. Taxes would be skyhigh, but still FAR below black market prices.

I think one of the reasons alcohol and tobacco are legal is because you can't easily grow tobacco and alcohol is fairly difficult to make... It's WAY easier to just buy a case of beer or a carton of smokes. Weed would be the opposite... It's super easy to grow good weed, but people are afraid to get caught and fried.

actually, tobacco is known for being able to grow in a HUGE variety of conditions. It just takes up a LOT of nutrients. And one must cure the tobacco and mix it to make it with filler to make it somewhat pleasant to smoke.

Marijuana can go from being grown to being smoked in a much simpler process.

Rooster is right.

the legalization of marijuana would definitely increase the amount of people growing it in their home, and since most of the world isnt enough of a pothead to smoke a plant to themselves, they would be inclined to sell it.

What happens to the price of a product when a massive amount of new suppliers come into the industry? prices drop, fast - especially with the marijuana-growing industry, since it will have practically no barriers to entry - just a couple hundred bucks for fixed setup costs and a raised power bill.

So, supply increases, prices drop. i'm hopin for at least a $15/8th equilibrium price

Tobacco can grow in many places. They have lots of farms in Southern Ontario.

That's crazy man! I'm still fighting my friends on legalization. They say it won't happen in the next 10 years...I say it'll happen in the next 10 if not 5.

We are dealing with 2 or 3 entire generations brainwashed to think weed is a menace to society. My favorite is the idiots who say:

"I don't do drugs, I only drink beer and smoke cigs"

People are just conditioned to think of alcohol and cigarettes as perfectly fine vices, while weed, shrooms, coke, etc. fall into a "dangerous drug" category. The fact is, they are all the same!

Until people in power get their heads out of their asses, it will stay illegal. Tons of police/LEA get a TON of funding to "fight" drugs... People will fight tooth and nail to keep those funds rolling in, at OUR expense.
