I was just thinking about re-starting this thread. Good work Newt! I have several books on the auction block. I'm too lazy to list them all again right now, but if anyone wants to do a swap, post your books here.

superpimp's book club idea is entirely different than mine. This makes for confusion. Both ideas can be a part of the Book Club. I demand a forum!

The old thead had a bunch of people that seemed interested. My idea, for any newcomers, was to have a member suggest a book that a link would be given to for Amazon. People could acquire a copy of the book any way they wanted, but if they bought it from Amazon, through the link, it would make money for the Shroomery.(10-15 percent of the sale price?) if people bought it through the link.

Then we would hold scheduled discussions on the boards and in chat.

A lot of people thought it would be a good idea to have a list of guidelines in helping people suggest a book. The person who selects the book would be chosen randomly.

The possible limitations I remember were:
-less than 20 years old
-non drug-related

I'm probably forgetting some. These limitations are up for discussion. Anyway, I think there were about ten interested people, which is pretty good considering this is the Suggestions forum.

Superpimp's book swap could also be included in the forum.

Anyway, I know that this is a group that generally prides itself on being literate so I think this could catch on and be good for the community.

If you are interested please post.

I agree that this subject needs it's own forum. I also agree that both of our ideas could be used in that forum. You have the suggested books/Amazon thing for Shroomery profit and member discounts, and also the book swap, which would be in the same spirit of free trade as the spore exchange.
I don't necessarily like the idea of limitations on any type of books, at least not at first. You are severely limiting yourself if you ban books over 20 years old. Nobody here wants to read "Pride and Predjudice" or "Ethan Frome" but nobody here is going to reccommend those old ass books anyway. Banning drug books doesn't have to be done either, unless it turns out that the only books being traded are grow guides, THIKAL, and Uncle Festers LSD manufacturers guide. I doubt that will happen anyway, the people here are eclectic and well read enough to offer up more different types of books than that. If drug books do start to be a problem, that can always be addressed by the Mods later.

Maybe we could do away with the idea of limiting the books and just have the randomly selected party suggest three books and then a vote could be taken on which one we would read.

the literary cannon
is the body of works that makes up
our great literature.

It spans from before recorded time to
the present. Our cannon contains great literary agents
whose works have been able to use the literary constructs with a special insight that deems them worthy of belonging to the great collection of lwork that is the literary cannon.

err. you know...the cannon

pay some attention at that community college damn it

I read Notes From Underground, I didn't think it was too spectacular.
Newt, have you read Eye Scream by Henry Rollins? It's great.

What's trashy about Last Exit or Tropic of Cancer?

To me trashy is all that airport-bookstore/Stephen King/John Grisham/title-always-starts-with-a-"the"-type shit; trash as in general rubbish, not necessarily sex and violence.

No. Trashy fiction would be Chicken Soup for the Dead Man's Soul and stupid books
like that.

How could you even suggest Burroughs as trashy fiction?!?

We staying within 20 years or what?
