Worm Castings
    #616339 - 04/23/02 02:13 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Just a quick question... I have tried the bulk straw tek with sucess but now that I have moved into an apartment, I don't have all that backyard room to store and pasturize the straw. I found a supplier that sells worm castings for $40 for 200 lbs. My question is "can I only use worm castings for a bulk substrate and not have to add straw?" Thanks in advance. I have tried to search the forum with no luck.

I haven't tried, so I do not know for sure, but my guess is that you wont have very good results. I am in a similiar living situation and found that coir makes a fairly nice replacement for straw. Mix coir with birdseed and worm castings, pasteurize, and you have a pretty nice bulk substrate (granted, it is more expensive than straw/dung, but the constraint here is apartment living, not price). Nobody will question the bag of birdseed or a few bricks of coir stored in the closet and it doesn't take too much time to prepare. Pasteurizing in a large plastic trash can in the bathtub is really the only messy part.

Thanks a lot! Maybe I will just go down and pick up some horse manure. I can't seem to find good cow manure anywhere. Only steer manure which doesnt work.
