inoculation question

i have reason to believe that my 1/2 pint jars could be contaminated because i wasnt able to boil them in water for a full hour. is it possible that i could wait a few days (say, a week) to inoculate them to see if any contams appear? or do you have to inoculate right after the jars cool? the jars have not been opened since i boiled them. the lids are sealed tight with a piece of tin foil over the sealing disc and under the threaded ring. i just dont want to waste my syringe and inject it into a bunch of contaminated jars. can someone tell me if this will be alright? also i'd like to know if i need to seal the holes in the lids back up after i inoculate. is it better to leave the holes uncovered or tape them up? does the mycelium need air to colonize? but will contamination get in if i let them uncovered?

Yes, you can waite a week before innoculation. Just keep them in a dark, cool place. podman19 Said: also I'd like to know if i need to seal the holes in the lids back up after i inoculate. is it better to leave the holes uncovered or tape them up? does the mycelium need air to colonize? I presume you have a vermiculite layer covering your substrate, or a Mushroom-Madness Contamination Guard. (Which can be made from tyvek if you wish to make your own). If you have a vermiculite layer, then taping the holes will add an added sense of security. But if you are using contamination guards, you do not have to tape the holes. The mycelium does need air to colonize, and will receive air whether the hole is taped or not. I hope this information will help you in your research.
