*****Hundreds of lights, and a car battery*****
    #6129258 -

Okay, this is for an art project I am planning on doing.

First, here are the materials:

100 blinker systems (from random cars, courtesy of the local junkyard)
(#, depends on how many are needed) of car batteries to run this operation
100 blinker/car light bulbs
100 sockets for the bulbs
(#, depends on how many are needed) inverter (charges the battery(ies) while it(they) are using energy at the same time)

Here is what I plan to do:

I want to arrange all the light bulbs/sockets in a sculpture-like form. I want all the bulbs to be blinking in a random fashion (which is taken care of by the blinker systems themselves). What I don't know how to do is hook the system up efficiently; nor do I know how many batteries this would take.

So, any tips on automobile/wiring technical shizzat would be awesome.

thanks!

Here is a little diagram for this system (L=Light bulb, B=Battery, I=Inverter, S=110v Wall Socket):

You need to find out how much power the light bulbs require... 10W, 60W, 100W? You also need to find out how much power the blinkers require. These can take as much as the bulb in some cases. Add all the numbers together, and you know how much power your system will require. Add another 10% or so for wire overhead, slop, etc.

Now decide how long you want to power the system. Multiple the time you want it to run, by the power required to run it, to get the required watthours your battery pack must be able to produce at 12v (watch your units... seconds vs hours).

Finally, select batteries that match your requirements. Probably deep cycle lead acid. The batteries will have a watthour rating. Connect multiple batteries in parallel to increase watthours while keeping the voltage the same.

Remember, you can kill yourself with high voltage from batteries as easy as you can kill yourself with high voltage from the wall socket. Be careful.

The blinkers might well interrupt the flow of current. If they do, you will not be able to connect them in series and get all of them blinking independently, but rather have to wire them separately, which can be an incredible mess of cables.

Also, if a lot of the lights are blinked-out, the others will have a lot of available current and the voltage will shoot up.

This project might be more complicated than it seems at first glance.

Eh? There may be a bit of ringing, but the internal resistance of the battery will stabalize the voltage.
