form of light sailing possible?
    #1935659 - 09/20/03 04:23 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

an idea just popped into my head. i haven't fully thought through it yet. i figured posting here might give everyone something to think about.

i was looking out my window, watching the wind blow through the trees. a leaf caught the wind and sailed off on the wind current. there were also beams of light passing through the bare spots of the tree.

here is what i came up with:
there is much more energy in light than there is in wind. by making a leaf/device (operating at a high level of efficency) that could catch the light beams (like a sailboat or leaf catches the wind), the light would propel that device at great speeds.

it seems like it could work with the right technology.

has this ever been explored? is it possible?

yes and yes.
I first read about it in Discovery magazine around 1994. I have sense seen several references in Popular Science and on a few TV specials. If I'm not mistaken a few prototypes have been launched and the acceleration and distances are transmitted here. I've heard mention of such devices also storing light energy in solar cell charged batteries for use in deep spcae without strong "light currents".

NASA is working on it. Here's an article:

It's way cool stuff.

Sorry! But that's not a bad idea to think up on your own, I think.
I have a voluminous library of Science Fiction/fact (Analog, etc) from the '50's and early '60's that I inheirited from my Grandfather, and I recall reading a few articles on that very same subject, so it's been about for some time.

thanks. i knew it was a good idea. i come up with good ideas from time to time, but it pisses me off when i find out that others have already turned the idea into reality....and they didn't tell me. :smirk:

toxicman - thanks for the link.
spooky. extremely similar to what i imagined. they even had the same idea about the lasers. if i didn't spend so much time trying to think of a better way to grow shrooms, i might actually invent something useful. i wonder if nasa would hire me if i told them i knew of a way that mushrooms could send you to a different planet.

star trek the next generation did a super version of your idea. only it was a warp field they used, instead of light field i guess. they had this ship sitting in orbit of some planet and they shot this warp field at it and it went cruising along at warp speeds.

also, there was a Futurama where they use a light beam to travel. at their stop there was one of those triangle prism things as the "station" or whatever to get off at. when they jump off bender (or someone) says "okay, we are going nearly the speed of light now, so roll when you land"

Also, if you take a 360 degree hinge and put a propeller type thing with one side white and the other black, and shine a light at it, the black side will absorb more energy and the thing will spin. its crazy.

Your talking about a radiometer. I bought one a few years back, no idea where it is now. It spun really fast under these halogen lamps I have.

Alexander Graham Bell did a lot of research on using light as a means of transporting information. Before he invented the telephone he invented a similar device that worked off light rays. This is the basic foundation of fiber-optics.
