Whats the most powerful 12V battery (amperage)
    #3167097 - 09/22/04 11:18 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hi, I am currently making a wizard staff prop for school and need to know wat the most powerful 12V battery is. I know I can get 12V froms 8 D batteries but I am looking for something with more amps that will last me a long time. I know there is some lithium (ion) high tech batteries out there that could be purchased for cameras and drills etc.... By the way, I need to fit this inside a foot long 4" diamter PVC pipe...In other words, no car batteries and such. Can somebody please point me in the right direction?

Have you considered making a small step-up transformer for it? The drawback to this is that you'll get an increase in voltage, but a decrease in amps. But it should make a good little spark, if that's what you're after. Sorry I couldn't be of more help....

I dont need more volts...I need more amps. FOr example, I could get 12 Volts from 4 3 Volt CR2016 (the small disc batteries that power your watch) but these 12V wouldnt be able to start a car. They dont ahve eneouph amps. I need a high tech battery like maybe even one made for a laptop or something that would be able to energize 12V plasma lamps-inverters-sequencers-blacklights etc.... If I would 8 1.5V AAA together, I could probably light up my prop for a minute or 2 before those batteries would be drained.

4" diameter kinda cuts down your options... go with alkaline D cells unless you can find a sealed lead acid (SLA) battery that can fit in the tube, which would be a lot better (rechargable and higher current)

Look for 12v emergency lighting batteries. They'll fit in your constraints, and are powerful enough to start scooters.

there are a myriad of sealed lead acid batteries that fit that form factor. i know those battery packs you see on phone poles are actually siz individual battery cylinders that look like a capacitor with the dimensions of a ~3" dia flashlight. they are something in the order of 2--4Ah. For reference, my DeWalt 18v Extended Run Battery only packs 2.4Ah.

You need to determine how much amperage is being sunk(X). Then you need to match your battery to provide XAh with a dab of headroom. Use a bench DC supply as power with an ammeter to get X. you may need to consider methods of reducing power consumption. also, you can use voltage regulators (of sufficient power-rating) to make an 18V (or whatever) source work in your 12V project.
