Well I don't claim to be smart but I can tell you this.
Casing isn't something you just dive in to early. Get a
coulpe of flushes from your cakes, and keep reading,
then try your hand at casings later.
There are plenty here that will say "fuck cakes, go straight
to casings" But cakes are like anything else, if you get it
right, they will make you proud.
If you want PM me with a list of questions and I'll help you
all I can either way you decide to go.
I'd say there are several here who are good at casings, and
still keep a few cakes going. For one thing, the high humidity
set up that the cakes are in, works great for initiating pinning
with the casings when the time comes.
Another thing is that casing will add about a week to the wait
until you are harvesting.
Hope that helps until someone smarter gets here.

I don't know. I did casings for my first crop ever(just recently). Out of 8 casings only two got dumped out. Other than those two no contams or problems. You can start out making casings and using good substrates, just make sure you have a PC, a spray bottle peroxide and another of IPA(isopropyl alc.). Very simple.

Exactly my point. And I'm glad you had success. But I'd be
willing to bet that there are more newbies who fail at casings
without trying cakes, than there are newbies that fail at cakes
without trying casings. Obviously you were well informed or
just lucky or both.
And one little fun fact that shouldn't be overlooked, If you get
a little of that alchohol misted on you skin, then get a little of
that peroxide in the same place, it's very simple to get a nasty
ass chemical burn.
But you probably already knew that. Maybe someone who
didn't will read this and learn something. Beware!

I agree with WakingUp. I'm doing well with casings and bulk spawn now, but my cake experience made that possible. I tried some casings early on, and failed miserably. I think my cake experience gave me a "feel" for the little guys. Now I can recognize a problem when it begins, and (sometimes) correct it, rather than losing that batch. I can't count the dozens of things I've learned the hard way, and that is after MONTHS of reading this site. You will be just as proud of your cakes as you will of your casings. Try it all, experiment, and have fun.
