caseing (smart soil)
    #607191 - 04/13/02 12:57 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I got some smart soil.I am going to use for my caseings......the ingredients are:
organic materials derived from composted forest products, sphagnum peat moss,
vermiculite, prelate, ground diplomatic limestone (pH Adjuster) a wetting agent and
water holding polymer. Now what I would like to know is would I still do a 50/50 with the vermiculite.....since it has vermiculite in it....I did try one caseing with 75% smart soil and 25% vermiculite....it was cased two days ago and mycelium poking through in a few places now.....should I patch for a more even pin set? Do you think this smart soil would be good for the caseing?

Thank you for any input at all

I haven?t don a casing yet but the consensus around hear is that you want your casing material to be inert meaning that you don't want any nutrients in the casing layer. You may have problems with your "smart soil" if your mycelium takes a liking to the "composted forest products" and feeds from it. I would think that this would cause overlay and inhibit pinning.

But then again what the hell do I know?

Sounds like everything is fine as is. You should leave your tray alone, and let nature do its thing. Since it has vermiculite in it already, you don't need to add any. There are no set rules for casing, just do what works for you. For a while I was using sterilized african violet mix, and it worked great. Now I use a pre mixed 50/50 mix I found at the local gardening store. As with any hobby, you have to start somewhere. Enjoy.
