Smart Soil

So I went to Lowe's today to buy some more Verm and Peat for a new casing mix batch and I see this big bag made by Prussel's called Smart Soil. I flipped the bag over and started reading the back. The ingrediants said: Composted Pine Bark, Vermiculite, Peat Moss, Perlite, Limestone and watering agent or somethign like that... Anyone ever try this for casing? It was in a huge ass bag for like $13. I almost bought it just to try but thought I would ask if anyone else has first. Anyone see a problem with the composted Pine bark in it? It said like 35-40% of that. Interested in anyone's opinion or experience.

Sounds kind of like bx promix only difference is the pine bark whichg might throw your ph off. Do a ph test of the soil, and becareful cause bag soil does spawn contams. or at least for my friend it did. Coco fiber is the way to go havent had a problem yet.

You think it will be a problem if I sterilize it?

sounds like a kick ass casing mixture... definately try it if you have $13 to spare, if anything... just pasturize it, but I think that what the lime was added for, to balance the ph, so its probably ok.

i still think there are lots of traces of it, and probably some nice, deadly resins.

That is what I was wondering.. I know that people use mulch and pine straw in places that they don't want stuff to grow becuase of the resin in it.... I have no idea what being composted would do though.

Well,I have a small bag of 'sta-green' 'smart soil' right here, and it says that only in goergia do they put pine bark in it, so if your not in goergia, there is no pine bark in your soil, btw, it makes good casing soil yes, it is just like jiffy mix.
