Is there a "pf tek" of Portobello Mushroom growing?
    #6086791 -

Hoping for a link for a very user-friendly tek specifically for Portobellos.

Also a link for spore prints for Portobellos, if applicable.

Thanks!

Portobellos are just older agaricus bisporus mushrooms that are past the button stage.
They are a "parasitic" fungi in that they prefer overtaking other organisms rather than just growing over sterile substrates. I think they also need a casing layer. So the PF tek isnt likey to work. Do a search and you'll find some here have been (marginally) successful at growing them.

however you can inoculate some sterilized manure in the jars (try to check the tutorials for Panaeolus species), when the jars are fully colonized you can tranfer them in a common foood plastic bag and cover with ground...soon the mycelium will colonize the "casing" layer and *bop* will appear the "buttons"

i've never try to grow them but here in Rome are LARGER coltivated in the worst bacterical/mold conditions. Think simply that were cultivated until 40 years ago into the CATACOMBS and actyally into old caves.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading that Port's are secondary decomposers, meaning they feed off of bacteria and the waste products produced by organisms during composting. Meaning they do not grow well (or at all?) from straight manure, but rather require nutrients that are only created during compositing.

Yes you're right!!! i misunderstood that he wants procede with a PF tek (directly with spores)

mumble mumble..

in effect quite all the Portobellos, almost commercializated in Italy, are strains with unproductive spores. I believed if he starts inoculating with LC (=liquid culture) there are better rates of success.

i forgot to mention that the manure must have complete its own process  of aerobic actived by urea (if you find big masses of horse manure and put your hand into the temperature is very hot..it reachs the 70°C)

in the manure some growers add straw!

unfortunately these are one of the difficult species to grow (at least for the casual hobbyist) ..... please feel free to take this warning as a challenge and have a go anyway!

opne them with a common browser, they'll be open in WindowsMediaPlayer

today, here,  methods to grow them are changed but places are the same!!!

For that i know the crucial point is the one with the casing, without it they will not fruit.

They are quite easy to get to colonise manure type substrates, but the problem is generally fruiting. You will need a non-sterile casing layer of something like a 50/50 mix.
They wil fruit poorly without being cased with a casing layer full of a particular micro-organism.
