Fixing a noisy exhaust?
    #6093076 -

So, I have an old car. 93 Mirage.
Theres something wrong with the exhaust, I don't think it's the expansion joint.. but there is defo something wrong, and it's up near the manifold. The car seems to run fine, but man is it noisy.

Dilema, all garages are closed, and I need this fixed for monday morning. I start a new job in a residential area and can't be driving a noisy ass car in there at 8:30am. Is this something I can fix myself, having access to basic tools, and no welding aparatus?

I'm off to the hardware store to buy a jack, some axle stands, and a roll of muffler tape.

Does the exhaust pipe have a hole in it, or is it broken or don't you know? If it's broken or has a hole in it you can go to a auto store and pick up a exhaust patch kit, which is a piece of shrink wrap cloth and a metal wire to pin it up with. You just wrap tight, and then run the car for like 10 minutes and you're good to go. Won't be as good as new, but will at least make you through work and to a repair shop.

Find another car to borrow or take a cab/bus. Less mess/cost.

You can fix it man. My Mitsubishi got really loud and I doscovered that there was about a 3/4 inch seperation all the way around the exhaust line. I'm not quite sure what section but it doesn't matter, I did a rock solid repair on it that's still good today, 3 months down the road.

I wouldn't recommend those muffler patch kits. I actually used that first, it was messier than shit and only held for about three days. Go to the auto part store and quick some JB Weld and some Quick Steel. The JB Weld is a liquid epoxy that comes in 2 tubes and the quick steelis a putty epoxy that comes in a cylinder. Since you're already got jacks/ramps it'll be a sinch.

The beauty of the Quick Steel is that it doesn't matter how big the hole or gap is, you can form the putty just how you need it. If you're still not sure where the leak is, one thing you can do is make up some dish soap/H2O solution, heavy on the soap, in a spray bottle and spray it all around the area when the car is running. Wherever air escapes, you shopuld see bubbles. If it's a bigger gap, you should have no trouble spotting it. So first use the quick steel to basically fill the gap and create a new surface. It's a putty you knead in your hands, it's not messy, and after a few minutes it starts to get hot then quickly begins to harden so you have to work fast. SO use that first to fill in your gap, overlapping the area a bit to make it solid. It'll set quick. Then go in and mix up your JB Weld and paint it all around the area to make it rock solid. I used a small paintbrush, worked great.

Let it cure for like 12 hours I think, or whatever the JB weld package says and you're set. Even if you don't have that much time, you should be alright since the quick still will hold everything in place.
Do it up!

So I coverd the damaged area completely in quicksteel.. (I got a dfiferent brand but as far as I can tell it's the same stuff) It's a dark grey putty, and it said it's good for up to 2000f degrees! Kinda like dryish clay.

The problem was a broken connection between the pipe and the catalytic convertor. I scraped and brushed the two connections and then smothered one side with the quicksteel. Next I wired them together really tight-like using steel wire. Then I encased the whole damn thing in a blob of quicksteel.

The quicksteel says to wait 4 hours for it to cure.. do I really have to wait that long before I can use the JB weld on it? I'm antsy to get it on there right away.

Thanks for the help man, it seems to be working well so far.

You probably have a hole in your resonator due to rust.

Cool man. No, you don't have to wait, you can go ahead and slather that JB Weld on right away. The quick steel sets right away, curing is the final set up. When I did mine, by the time I finished shaping the quick steel, it was already rock hard and I put the JB weld on right away.

Also, I forgot to mention, something else I did that I think worked really well. After I put on the quick steel, I wrapped part of a large coffee can that I cut up all the way around the pipe then secured that on with two large hose clamps side by side. Then I covered that completely with JB Weld, overlapping by a few inches on both sides. Sorry I left that out yesterday. I tried to reply a few times last night but for some reason I could not get threads to display.

You should be fine with just the epoxy, but if you want it extra secure, try the coffee can/hose clamp thing then paint that all over with JB Weld.

Oh, I just reread your reply and saw that you wrapped it up tight with wire as well, that should be good.  Did you have a seperation all the way around the circumfrence of the pipe like mine, or just a section. Either way, if you wrapped it uptigth with wire and used epoxy generously, you should be good to go.
