As a gardener, sometimes things can get a little philosophical. I was musing on the beauty of the cycle of life the other day as my eyes were watering from smooshing serrano pepper seeds out of ripe red fruit.

I have been blessed by the Pepper Gods who in spite of bugs, fungis (funguses?) and deer lips and hooves helped me keep the peppers growing enough to take seed and make food this year and seed for next year(s).

Hail Mighty Serrano! Hail Allmighty Habanero!

Just make sure the seed you save doesn't come from Hybred plants. :wink: You never know what you'll get the next year. Just in case you don't already know that.

Well I don't know about them Hybred plants the label on the two packets I still have that I planted this year didn't say.  Oh well. 

I have the mixed variety pepper seeds in a pack that also means I won't know what I will get with them either.  :confused:

Mostly though I have just a ton of various lettuce spinach radish beet collards cabbage etc. etc. that I didn't plant this year as anticipated.  Only so much room to do things and the peppers and tomatoes dominated action this year.  In spite of my best efforts to keep the deer out they once again trampled and ate most everything including peppers although the Habeneros keep them honest and even the Serranos get their attention.  I leave some defensive serranos up top so that they only eat the green leaves to the peppers.

My best efforts consisted of attempted chasing, shooting with a BB gun, hanging rope and string to tomato cages and pissing in my garden.  The deer only looked at me hungrily when chased or worse the baby kept bouncing against the chain link fence unable to jump it damaging the plants underneath, had a little surprise when hit with a BB, got stuck in the rope and tomato cages and stampeded off causing bent cages and more damage to the plants in their path, and obviously don't mind my piss enough to stop eating my plants.

Next year best efforts will consist of full deer fencing in the entire back yard.  8 feet minimum all around.  And maybe a pit bull... :evil:

Deer are strange animals. I would have to imagine that a dog that would be prone to barking at deer would definitely keep deer away. In fact, my father has put dogs down for chasing deer through the wooded hills. I'm sure it would be less costly than to have to install a fence like that. Get a Norwegian Elkhound, though. :wink:

Fall has pretty much arrived up here in the Dakotas, and the change of the seasons has myself aware of the beauty of the cycles of life as well. There is a certain day when you have those brisk, chilling winds that bring some leaves to start falling, and you know its here. I'm looking forward to taking some vacation in October and visiting south-western Wisconsin, one of those areas in which tourists show up just to see the amazingly-colored hills. I believe I have a couple of hits that should make it even more of an incredible experience. :wink:

I suppose I could get a small or medium non-chain link fence jumping dog and let them run around in the yard as it is entirely fenced. I would think a pit bull would keep the deer out but the only problem is if they jump the fence which is zero problem for them to do. So, if you keep them in a small kennel it kind of defeats having a dog. The deer will probably still come around. I need a non jumping yet aggressive and big enough to make the deer know who is boss kind of dog.

Norweigan Elkhound aren't they super big??

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Actually, they aren't super big at all. They are probably about the same size as a Chow chow, perhaps a bit smaller - definitely less hair (which doesn't mean they don't have a lot of hair! :grin:). They are a good medium-sized dog, smaller than a German Shepherd.

At the same time, they are strong and well-built, very stocky, and there bark is very distinctive. They are a more independant dog, but, at the same time, they are extremely compassionate with their owners and friends. Its seriously like having a three-year old child. :smirk:
