Gypsum Pellets
    #607385 - 04/13/02 05:30 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

The only Gypsum I can find is in pellet form. I'm using it in rye jars. Should I crush it up? And How much should I use per 100 grams of rye?

well. i am very new to the whole grain thing as well but in "Grain for Simple Minds" http://www.fungifun.org/grain/ , it says to use a knife tip full of gypsum per jar. all i have are pellets as well and i wasnt really aware that it came in any other form to be honest with you. i just grab a pinch of pellets and toss them in. if you are supposed to crush them up then i guess i am more clueless than i thought. the idea i believe is to keep the grain from clumping together or something and mine isnt having that problem i dont think. sorry i couldnt be of more assistance.

Thanks. I just wasn't sure what a knife tip full was, but I assumed it was a pinch. And the gypsum I have says in huge letters on it 'In Pellet Form', so I assumed most gypsum wasnt in pellet form. And you cant scoop pellets with a knife, but you can scoop powder, so again I thought it was supposed to be powder, but I figure 'knife tip full' is probably an American expression or something.

ok, now i am positively confused. i know it is a soil additive, but furthur searches on the web were rather inconclusive. it is apparently used to line baseball fields in additio to being a "tofu coagulant". would anyone care to illuminate? is there a reason get pellets over powder or vice versa?

I made about 30 pf cakes infused with a little bit of gypsum. In about a week I'll check their progress. Been having success with my pf cake recipe (without gypsum) for a while.

I dissolved my gypsum in the water I soaked/simmered in. Worked like a charm.

I actually soak my grains with gypsum so it doesn't matter if it's powder, granular, or pellet. It should be water soluble. Just mix it into water first before dumping into grain soak. I do 5% dry grain weight = gypsum weight. Works great and helps the grains from clumping.

I added it to the initial mixture of vermiculite, water and brown rice flour and then sterilized
