    #11905377 -

Go to your local hardware store and ask if they have any scrap pieces of plain old dry wall sitting around (they often do) Take it home and peel off the paper and bust it up in a coffee grinder. There ya go free powdered gypsum

Well this seems like an obvious answer to me, but, just open a phonebook and call around to local nurseries and garden centers.  There are small size boxes of gypsum pellets widely available.  I even see it at Fred Meyer's grocery.

If you can't find a local nursery/garden center/hardware store that carries it than ask them to order some in for you.  The small boxes at Fred Meyer's I see are only a few dollars. ~P~

I buy mine from a homebrew supplier. If you have one near you, you can usually get little 2oz bottles of fine powder for about $1.50

when i first bought the 25 lb bag of gypsum at lowes i thought i didn't need that much but i'm now on my second bag.
i say buy the big bag because you can use gypsum in almost everything when it comes to bulk. you can throw a handful in the soak and simmer of your grains, you can put it in your bulk and your casing.

is it necessary to grind up the pellets?  would using the pellets straight out of the bag not work?

The most cost effective way is to buy a small square of drywall from home depot, break a chunk off and grind it down to a fine powder in a plastic bowl with a mortar or the hammer that you used to break it off with, Drywall is cheap and made out of gypsum

I ended up buying a 40lb bucket of drywall mud.  It needs to set before it's usable but in small quantities I haven't had any trouble with it.

Any Lowes, Home Depot, Menards. Go to the contractor side where the drywall always is. There are long thick rectangular pieces 4"x4"x4 feet. They are larger pieces cut and folded into shipping spacers for stacks of drywall. They are free. Look in dumpsters at housing construction or smaller commercial construction sites. Its ok people get in dumpsters all time on job sites. Just dont steal a stack of plywood or 2x4 studs, cameras on construction sites are common now. But if you just cant wait, cut a small piece out of the wall and patch it later! I am drywall

Exactly.

It's 'clean' non-treated gypsum they just throw away....like the TEK in my sig says.

The problem with getting any ready to mix powder or already mixed mud is you have add water (in the powder's case), let set and harden, and then smash/grind it up. Plus it costs.

Shipping spacers are ready to be smashed, and are free.
