If I go to home depot, what is gypsum? I looked at plaster of paris and other dry wall type powders yet none said gypsum. Only one had it listed third in the ingredient list. All of them said they were different types of calium though. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks

Oh yeah, I'm looking for gypsum so that I can add a little to each jar of rye so it buffer the mix as well as keeps the grains from sticking.

I beleive it is the drywall its self not the paste or patcher. You can just break up a little peice of dry wall and there you go. Make sure to get as much of the paper out of it.

Gypsum is drywall. The completely white or green sheets. But drywall it self has a paper face to it so if you blend it make sure you dont put the paper in there. They also sell a paperless drywall that is rough to the touch sort of like sand paper. Put just see if they sell broken sheets of drywall. I work at Menards and we sell 2x4 sections for 99 cents and 4x4 sections for 1.99. If not go to like a lawn and garden store because they should have bags of pulverized gypsum. At least we sell it at Menards.

Grind the pellets with a coffee grinder or smash them with a hammer. You want powdered gypsum. Pellets won't help, because they'll take too long to break down. RR

it's illegal to put asbestos into anything that will be used for habitation, virtualy the only consumer product that still contains asbestos is brake pads
glass dust can cause silicosis but that's if it's inhaled

I had pelletized gypsum in a covered 5 gallon bucket that the lid cracked, sat in the rain, and it ended up as five gallons of gypsum paste. The gypsum was for my garden. Some good came of it though, I had been mashing the pellet with a hammer or with a mortar and pestle for mushroom growing,
You can add water to the pellets in a cup until the water and pellets turn into a paste. Just let it sit a day or two in the water. Then pour the paste onto a tray to dry. When it gets to the point that its just a little bit damp scrape the gypsum around and smash it some so it's powdered. It's pretty easy to powder before it drys all the way. Then let it dry the rest of the way. If you let it dry all the way on the tray and then try to pulverize it, it will be as hard as the pellets.

Drywall is gypsum. Whoever told you it has glass fibers is just plain wrong. As a side note, asbestos is not even a carcinogen unless inhaled. You can eat all you want. Please don't spread disinformation. Please check your facts. RR

Drywall contains glass fibers....... Asbestos fibers are a carcinogen for the same reason.

People who work with fiberglass or who have worn-out duct work lined with fiberglass in their homes or workplace may have long-term exposure to fiberglass. There is no evidence that fiberglass causes cancer in people. Animal studies have shown an increased risk of cancer when fiberglass fibers were implanted in the lung tissue of rats, but these studies are controversial because of how the fibers were implanted.

Ummm...hate to disagree with someone as knowledgeable as yourself, RR, but...sheetrock DOES contain fiberglass. It has for about the last 20-25 years.
If you don't believe me, you can see it for yourself. Break a piece and look across the break. All those little fibers sticking out are glass..
