I remember when I was younger we went to a week long boy scout camp. Our leader told us all that there were sassafras trees all around there and showed us what it looked like. He made it very clear to us all that it was a dangerous drug and that if we were caught anywhere near it, we would be sent directly home.

I have looked everywhere for information on this tree and it's uses and I havn't come across anything that would give reason to keep kids away from it.

Does anyone know anything about this?

I'm starting to think my scout leader was a real douche. :boot:

From sassafras, one can isolate safrole... which is used in MDMA synthesis.

Of course, MDMA synthesis is complex and requires an investment in some decent equipment. Nobody should attempt it unless they're confident about the chemistry involved as well as the procedure... to act without sufficient understanding of the process could be dangerous to oneself and anyone nearby (neighbors for example).

Safrole has been used as the main precursor for the clandestine manufacture of MDMA (Ecstasy) and MDEA (Eve). The standard synthetic procedure for the production of MDMA from safrole is via isomerization in the presence of a strong base to isosafrole. This is then oxidised to 3,4-methylenedioxy phenyl-2-propanone. Finally a reductive amination with either methylamine (to make MDMA) or ethylamine (to make MDEA)

It is said to have a narcotic effect in large doses and may also cause vomiting, stupor and hallucinations.  The oil can affect the heart and liver in a detrimental way, and it is considered mildly carcinogenic.

safrole is a liver toxin, but it converts safrole to MDA does it not?

I wouldn't doubt that safrole itself could have effects on humans of some kind, as well.

I've never come across a 14-year old who knew enough about chemistry to make MDMA, hell... I've yet to meet a college student who can do it.

But if those 14-year-old kids had heard that sassafras could have inebriating effects on it's own, then they could get themselves into trouble.

that is true. so basically its like nutmeg inebriation, but extra toxic.

Nutmeg is also toxic to the liver, but i was thinking more in terms of carcinogenic activity which led the FDA to ban its use.

--Poison and Antidotes---The oil can produce marked narcotic poisoning, and death by causing widespread fatty degeneration of the heart, liver, and kidneys, or, in a larger dose, by great depression of the circulation, followed by a centric paralysis of respiration.

When I was a kid, we would make sassafras tea from the root bark of the tree. We wouldn't make this to get high, it just tasted good mixed with a little sugar. Back then we didn't know about any narcotic effect (at least I didn't). Every fall we would make up a big pot of tea. In the fall, the sap would run to the roots giving it more flavor. It wasn't until years later that I learnt about the carcinogenic properties of this plant. For a while you could even buy the roots in the store!

At was at a university library a month ago reading their awesome ethnobotanical books, and I came across sassafras and safrole as the specific chemical of description. It was in the US pharacopeia until the early 1900s, when they decided to ban it due to its carcinogenic properties, but what was interesting that the author chose to mention was that a 1 dose of sassafras tea was 1/13th as carcinogenic as 1 glass of beer... i thought that was quite interesting.
