When will these damn casings fruit?
    #604848 - 04/11/02 01:00 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Ok swid is a newbie. Instead of starting using the PF tek he went all out. Swid knows how to keep his shit clean and follow a recipe, so he figures fuck the low yeilding cake shit. He is using ryches birdseed substrate, casing with 50/50 and the strains he has going are hawaiian and mazatec from pf. He is not sure which are which though all of his casings got kinda mixed up. Anyway over the course of a two week period swid made 8 casings, using various sized containers. None are contaminated and all are growing extremely well.

Anyway 3 of the casings have been birthed. Swid birthed them when the casing layer was pretty well and evenly covered by mycellium, but not all the way colonized (trying to avoid overlay). The cakes were not incubated. They grew at ambient room temp in the top shelf of a closet at perhaps 75 degrees- maybe a little higher maybe a little lower. Even theough temps were low they still colonized nicely. So it comes time to birth and case. Then the casings were incubated at room temp(73-75 degrees) in a bin in darkness until 3 were ready to be birthed. I pull them out of the bin and birth them into a terrarium with perlite and plexi glass top, and cold shocked overnight. They have been sitting in a sunlit room at perhaps 71-2degrees for almost two weeks(1 1/2 to be exact). The mycellium has been growing noticable every day but still no sign of pinning or mushrooms. I have been fanning 2-3x per day, and I only mist if their is a really dry patch of casing soil. Is this normal? Did I maybe make it harder to initiate pinning by not incubating the cakes/casings at high temps? I am just starting to get worried that I may have fucked up somehow. They look great but it seems like a long time to wait for them to fruit.

Anyway sorry for the long post I just assumed it would be easier to answer my questions if you guys new the whole setup.

Oh and he now has a heated incubator, so his jars and casings can be kept at the right temps during colonization.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or comments guys.

I got the same problem. I have some casings going, all look healthy, no overlay, not too dry etc but no pinnning. I've searched and read every post on these forums that I can find that mentions casings or pinning and I've come to the conclusion that I just have to be patient and wait. There's not much else that can be done at this stage as far as I can tell. Unless you have overlay, in which case people seem to recommend deep scratching. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for any hints that might help but other than that I'm just gonna wait.

exactly what MushyMay said, just wait. if nothing turns color then you're good. keep RH high and give them some light. it could take up to a few weeks to pin. you'll start to notice small dense clusters (knots) which will be your pins some day very soon.

Awesome, thanks guys. I actually have noticed that in the last few days there have been little white clusters of dots forming all over one of them- maybe this is what I am waiting for?

Anyway so long as these bastards fruit, then I am going to have to disagree with the 90% of the people on this forum that recommend the pf tek for newbies and that shitty substrate. Swid had no probs at all with contams, and it was very easy. If you can follow directions then you can make a damn casing. Just use tons of isopropyl in a spray bottle, spray your hands and everything down before use and spray it into the air to kill airborn contams. It is really simple shit. In fact the 50/50 that swid uses to patch up the first signs of mycellium breaking through is not even sterilized! Still no contams.

So I say F#*K the PF tek!!!

(so long as my casings actually fruit that is, if not then I will silently stand corrected;)

for people who dont like much research and reading the PF tek is good, but for more serious newbies it isnt that hard to start off with whole grain such as rye or millet.. as long as sterility is practiced i kinda think its easier than the pf tek

well since you said you noticed little white dots all over you can almost count on 80% of those dots to turn into pins and then into fatty ass shroomies!!!!!!...Enjoy your first fruits cuz they are the most rewarding!!!!
