What kind of store can i find gypsum in? I don't want to order from a web site . Also how necessary is gypsum? I have decent shakablity in my rye grain and almost none with bird seed.I have to use a telephone book to get them 1/2 loose.

do you steep your birdseed? i thought it wasnt needed at first but i kept getting these nasty, wet, and unshakeable jars my first few tries. Sounds like bacteria right???? nope, there were parts in my birdseed that looked like soggy cereal that i discovered only after steeping. I stared adding gypsum at the same time I tryed steeping, so i know it helped me but to what degree i am not sure. I found it at the local home brew also.

No i do not steep. But, i do pre rinse under runing water for a few minutes , then drain real good . then i add seed and fresh water together.

cool well here is the answer to your first post straight from bluhoney's mouth (or keyboard):

Its an additive Gypsum: calcium sulfate (CaSO4) - essential to mushroom compost preparation - prevents the compost from becoming too "greasy" - by forming an equilibrium matrix with the water, also helps the colloids to flocculate producing a compost with a more granular structure with increased water holding capacity: provides Ca++ ions; a mineral essential to mushroom growth: helps to prevent the loss of nitrogen (from the breakdown of proteins during the act of composting) by chelating the ammonia. You can pick it up at most garden centers.
