Shrooms everywhere! UK Pictures.. ID Request Please??

Hi Guys,

Well im a novice hunter... im hunting in West Mids UK, on known areas shrooms and lib caps... i was on a solid 2 hour hunt today.. been very wet and had some warm sun... Mushrooms everywhere, whole lovely lush crops of them but i dont know what they are or how to ID them... I only picked a handful. i hunted vigoursley for 2 hours but this was the only type of shroom i could see... Jeez if they are the real deal ill be gutted that i let them all there.. LOL

OK so here goes... ive shown some pics of them in the patches growing naturally and some close ups of them back home...

Stem is light browninsh and fleshy
Cap on the smaller ones is brown and as they grow bigger the bigger ones get lighter brown i color.
The gills are cream coulored fleshy...
Spore - ive been trying to get a spore print but nothing really has dropped out... the gills are just kinda fleshy like a normal mushroom..
It smells like a mushroom..
Ive brusied one and picnhed it and it just goes a little darker where its brusied but not blue or anything...
The habitat is open heathland, loads of cow dung here and there and moist and lush....
Sorry i cant be more specific with the scientific stuff like spores but i took several pics which im helping may help....

There were loads of little patches like the ones ive shown in the photo...

Any ideas? Much appreciated..

Hello there.

It's best when in doubt to await the spore print. If it is purple to purple-brown this highly increases probability. Some psilocybes bruise blue particularly at the bottom tip of the stem and sometimes throughout the stem and even on the cap. It is unlikely that these are psilocybian, probably very much so. But a nice find nevertheless.

I can tell you with 100% certanity that they are not active.

As far as exact species goes, we'll need a spore print for these. Color is all we need, we don't need any of the microscopic stuff(to narrow it down to a genus, at least).

Did they have a veil, or veil remnants?

I've got a few ideas but I'm keeping my mouth shut until we hear about the spore print.

Cheers guys... The spore print isnt doing anything. i chopped stem off and laid on white paper, been a few hours and looked and nothing dropped, just a wet print.. no color or anything.... i guess they are just wild mushrooms... shame cuz i was hoping they were active and was gonna rush back there tomorrow and pick em all LOL

Its really hard as a newbie hunter as i know what im looking for as far a lib caps go becasue i have studied pictures of them from other posts but i had 2 hours solid today and found loads of these little buggers but nothing else and this in an area where they are reported to be....

I keep changing the place where i look from open heathland to more lush green areas under trees etc... nothing comes up but these ones so im really confused and frustrated...

Oh well ill keep searching and hopefully one hunt i will just stumble across a patch of the real deals and it will be like magic LOL - i guess ill keep searching and hoping...

thanks for help in identifying guys, it is appreciated and id be totally lost without ya!!

Wish me luck on my next hunt! Will leave it a few days as we got rain forcast so will let that pass and then go out again...

it usually takes more than a few hours to get a good spore print to drop, though when I was younger I was amazed when I picked some ink caps and the print dropped in like 30 minutes and I thought for sure I had goodies, so I let them dry, and they all digested themselves into a black mush... kinda got sidetracked there but yeah good luck man.

yeah im sure i will stumble across what im looking for soon..

had some advice that a lib cap with always have black gills - is that correct.. been studying loads of pics of them and kinda know im looking for a light brown witches hat nipple like looking thing! lol

Those look like the fairy ring champignon (Marasmius oreades), a tasty little gourmet mushroom. They have very fibrous stipes (stems) so you should be able to wrap them around a finger without them snapping in two.

The spore print should be white to cream and the caps should have a smell of bitter almonds.

I've picked a load of them in the UK during the past few weeks. Good in omelets and with ham IMO  :smile:
