Nice!

I found 3 chicken of the woods today. Only problem was 2 of the prime specimens were growing on Yew! All parts of the Yew tree apart from the flesh of the berries are highly poisonous so I wouldn't risk it...  :frown:

Did harvest a smaller specimen growing on Oak though

Nice pics. Last year I found boxes full of chickens.. all at the base of trees.
I'm going to try and see if I can find some tomorrow.

Yeah, I've only found a few growing from wood itself. Most of the ones I see are on the ground but very close to the base of a tree.

I think the ones that grow near the base of the trees are Laetiporus cincinnatus (white pore one), and not Laetiporus sulphureus. I prefer cincinnatus anyways

Re: Chicken of the woods [Re: Amatoxin]

I've found 6 chicken of the woods "sites" this year, and they've all (but one) been in the past week. On the specimens I collected for the table, I only cut off the fleshy caps, leaving the mushroom organism planted into the wood. I was informed that if I do this, there's a probable chance of the mushroom returning to that spot in the future.

Amatoxin - I braised (brief fry) mine with butter and salt and froze them. As with most anything, the taste and texture after the freezing declined a bit, but was still worthy of a Sulphur Shelf Sandwhich with onion, butter, lemon pepper and toast.

I hope everyone else is enjoying this mushroom, because I sure am!
