Hello, I'm a noob
    #6011425 -

Well I decided to get into shroom cultivation. We went on a couple of shroom hunts and came up with shrooms, but they were never anything "fun."

I ordered some spores from ralphster spores which seems to be a reputable place. I got the thai lipa yai and mexi-cube syringes. I mixed the flour, vermiculite, and water per the instructions...and came out with a ton of leftovers. Filled the 12 jars, boiled for about an hour at the stove's top temp. Let them cool for a day in a tub of room temp water. Took off the aluminum foil the next day and injected the spores through the holes in the top.

One problem I had was that sometimes it would be easy to control the syringe, while other times it would take a bit of force then shoot way too much into the substrate.

Some jars got 1cc+ while others got .25cc, do you think they'll all *eventually* colonize? I think the problem was that when I insert the syringe into the substrate, it gets clogged with some, and takes a bit of force to unclog. Any suggestions to prevent this?

I've been keeping them in my closet, wrapped in a blanket, with a light in the closet on to keep the temperatures at about 78-82. Our house stays at about 72, so I'm using a light to create heat until I get around to setting up the aquarium heater.

I injected the spores early saturday morning, it's now lunchtime on wednesday and I don't see any changes at all. It's the thai lipa yai strain which was described as "one of the fastest colonizers," so I'm starting to get worried that I haven't seen anything yet.

The only things I can think of, was that I left it in front of the light for a few hours on accident, but I don't think it would have got above 106. If I don't see anything in a few days should I inject the mexicube?

Give your jars more time, it's only been 4 days. The syringe problem was probably caused by a piece of vermiculite getting caught in the needle, it happens to my friend all the time. I hope you're not talking about injecting the mexicube spores into the same jars, because that's a big no-no. Good luck with your experiment

Just to be sure you did use BROWN RICE flour right? Not your regular baking flour. Also be careful you don't dry your jars out with that light.

Yeah I did use brown rice flour   Always research before doing my projects.  My other current project:

I will just wait a few more days like you suggested...although I think I might have cooked them with the light :frown:

Patience is the key. I've only done one BRF grow and it definately took a while. I went right to WBS and h poo. I've never looked back. =

I am in the same situation...being a first time grower that is. I did basically everything you did, and injected some spores from Ralph cept I bought Cambodias and India Orrisa. The video I have shows that activity can begin as soon as three days, but for me it almost took 7 and then I could see the mycelium beginning to form. Up until that point I was like...damn! Something went wrong! But i'm slowly learning the name of the game here is patience. I used a solid tuppleware container with a heating pad underneath it which worked good for awhile. But then I found out that the temp was much too hot, averaged 90 - 98 degrees. So now I have them in my water incubater at 84 degrees and they love it. I would suggest getting a water incubater as soon as you can.

I have a aquarium heater with an adjustable temp thing, I just need to find something to put it in.  I think my shrooms got wayyyyyyyy too hot from the heating lamp being too close to them :frown:  I'm going to give them until this weekend and then open one and dig through it to see if there's any progress, if not i'm going to start fresh with the mexi-cube.

yea I think the "Thermal death" temp is 106. And that light can easliy reach that. I dunno what you mean by trying to find something to put the incubator in. I have a double stacked one, it has the water in the bottem one and i put another tub on top of the same size. I put some weights on the top to submerse the top tub so the contents are surrounded by water. I check the water level and jars everyday and so far they seem to be absolutely loving it. If I get around to it i'll post some pictures.

Don't open them up. Just start the mexi cubes in other jars, why waste a possibly good jars, its only been 4 days, there might not be visible germiniation yet anyways. Try a TiT incubator, do a seach for it. When you get yourself going, use that turbo for some FAE :headbang:

What kind of light are you using that can put out that high of heat? I put mine in an 8 quart Rubber-made container and keep it on top of my hot water heater. The temp stays consistent and its to high for the kids to get into.

It's a 75 watt agro light.  Only lamp we had sitting around the apartment.  I have an aquarium heater I just need to find a rubbermaid container to put it in, has to be submersed so i'll probably cut a hole in the side and insert it horizontally and seal it up.  Just waiting on my paycheck

Do you have space above your hot water heater? You can put jars in shoe box and keep them plenty worm.

Yeah I have space but I share an apartment with 2 others.  One is cool with it and I'm dating the cousin of the other, and she is against all that, and he runs his mouth.  Don't want him knowing about it.

I'm going to build an incubator as soon as I get off work and probably start the mexicubes...I think these are dead :frown:
