I've almost finished reading Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut today since starting around 10 a.m. This book was reccomended to me, but it is not what I thought it would be but is still a good read. Anyhow, it got me thinking.
I can't, absolutely can't, live in the present, the now. For some reason I cannot stop dreaming. I am always making plans, or thinking about my plans (dreams). I am [obsessed] with my main dream and then all of its offshoots. But this is really becoming a problem.
Would we, humans, not be better off without dreams? Maybe without dreams we could see the bullshit of our [current] exsistence? On the other hand, without dreams would not 99% of us die or go insane...it's all we know, is it not, to dream and have goals?
Do other animals, dream (not in the sleeping sense)?

You and six billion other humans on this rock.
There is a way to do this. I don't know if you like to read, but there's a great book called "Buddhism Without Beliefs" by Stephen Bachelor. I would HIGHLY recommend it, it's one of the best books I've read on Buddhism yet. No dogma, no crap, just straight up Buddha.

""Do other animals, dream (not in the sleeping sense)?""
Have a dog? Pick up the leach.. [(Spelling?) By leach I mean: "band, bond, ligament, string, tie"] Or, if you are humane.. just open the door, or signal you are going for a walk... ...then you don't!
Look at the dog, is the dog dreaming? (..of taking that walk?)
BTW: I love how you use "other animals". And; side note: Are you bilingual?

Unforutnately no, Gomp, I'm not bilingual.
I understand what you're saying about a dog's leash/lead, but that is due to repetition. Does a dog ever dream about going to the beach or the mountains if it has never been there before? Does a dog dream about one day not having to do anything for its "master"?
What about monkeys or apes, etc...? Dolphins? Seeing as how they have "higher brain functions."
Fractalated: I'll say I'll check out that book, but since neither of the libraries near me have it, it may not happen. I've never gotten into the deal of ordering books online...I think I might get addicted.
leery11: I've tried the breathing method, and it rarely helps me relax, drift into sleep, or slow my mind. Maybe I need to find a teacher somewhere around here who can help...?

chanting is much more powerful.
make your voice a siren and resonate it with all parts of your body over the course of 30 minutes to an hour.
pay special attention to resonating in any places that are clogged up or hurt or need it.
then afterwards you can do the breathing and it will be more powerful.
but yeah classes can't hurt.

see, I've read hundreds of posts about all this, and it doesn't make sense to me at all. I don't know how to "pay special attention to places clogged, hurt, or ned it". Things like that is why I feel I need a teacher. I have trouble learning on my own, anyways.

well really if you just start emitting a tone and feeling it in your body (this is physical process, feeling the sound vibrations in your body) you will intuitively start to know, and you might feel some area in you that feels "clogged" or such, and you change your tone to vibrate into it.

it's that easy, but it takes practice and immersion before the benefits become really obvious.
for instance it's not like i can heal my body almost instantaneously by chanting into specific areas. but regardless the voice is excellent at cleaning the mind.
i just ordered a book the yoga of sound, and in his CDs I read something that said, there are two ways...... one is sound, the other silence..... and sound leads to silence.
all you have to do is sit and sustain a note. and you will then explore and find which notes sound best to you and resonate with your body.
http://www.consumerhealth.org/articles/display.cfm?ID=19990307124422
when you find the right tone intuitively, hold it until you are highly immersed in toning and don't care about anything else other than making noise, and you'll certainly come out of the session feeling different.
i found "ohhhhhhhh" to make me stoned actually, with eyes closed, focusing on the area between the genitals/anus (which is where the root chakra is, and "ohhhh" is said to correspond to it).
but you can tone whatever you want, it's like hacking into yourself.

how do having to take breaths play into the process?

i don't think it matters.
i just do it til i need more air, take a deep breath in, and keep doing it.
