from the undictionary
"He is widely credited with being sampled in every psytrance song ever made and discovering that a great change is going to take place in 2012 when millions of New Agers realize the Mayans didn't know shit."

Relax. It's only his own opinion.
Saying that the mayans didn't know shit surely is a ridiculous statement though. The Maya civilization is regarded as the most technologically advanced of all pre-Columbian civilizations in the Americas. They produced extremely accurate astronomical observations. Having that said, here is what i think.
I don't believe that there will be some profound event that will change humanity in 2012. Of course i'm curious to see if anything significant has happened by the time it comes around, but personally i just do not lay much faith into such prophecies, especially if they're date of occuring are set on a specific date.
But if there in fact turns out to be a massive change in human consciousness in 2012, then i think it would rather be a gradual transition rather than one profound event.
Just my two cents.

The world needs more Terence McKennas...
Or maybe not...
All I know is I enjoy jumping unabashed into The Mystery......

My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

i have a feeling you're gonna be disappointed. terrence mckenna writes pop-psychedelic-revisionist-anthropology/history. i have a copy of "food of the gods". i thought it was canon when i was 17 or so. since then i've realized that it's mostly "terrence's theory of history" and there's good reason that most anthropologists and historians pretty much ignore it.
for some reason, there is a strong human desire for the miraculous. catholics believe in sightings of the virgin mary. new age-y psychedelic enthusiasts believe in this 2012 thing.
if you look closely though, it's all quite weird enough without having to make shit up.

Far be it from me to judge whether Terence McKenna was on to something--anything at all--with his TimeWave and "Stoned Ape" theories. I like Terence McKenna because I think he is a good person, and his lectures are visionary in my opinion in that they question the nature of the cultures, world, and universe that we live in in a unique way. There are many paranoid delusionals in this world--McKenna, at very least, is an honest one.

Someone posted this link here but I will post again: http://www.matrixmasters.com/podcasts/index.html
Several terence mckenna talks on there.
As for the whole 2012 thing, I don't think it matters really. Either way, awareness goes on. 'This' never changes.

Try reading his book, "The Invisible Landscape". . . It goes into fine detail surrounding the Timewave and 2012. . . Lots of mathmatical equations worked through that i can't understand at the back of the book. LOL...

does anyone on the Shroomery have a copy of McKenna's TimeWave software? I wouldn't mind looking at some of the more recent dates

I have been mildly interested in the 2012 ideas and have read up on them a bit. Doesn't the Mayan calendar simply trace an astronomical cycle, a cycle which ends 2012? I don't see why we should read into this any further. Yes we are approaching a unique time where such and such planets align with whatever stars and then the cycle will begin again, but I don't think this means anything for us.
Why did the Mayan calendar end at 2012? This was the end of the cycle. They probably figured they had plenty of time before they had to make a new calendar. We make our calendars 365 days long, but there is no shift in consciousness on December 31st, it is simply the end of that calendar, and then the next begins.
Terence McKenna is the man and he had cool trippy ideas that are lots of fun to hear and he sounds like a great guy. And while I respect him and enjoy his ideas, I don't really put a lot of scientific merit into them. But really, I love you Terence!!!!

Also checkout Daniel Pinchbeck's book 2012 - Return of Quetzalcoatl. He links a bunch of stuff together with 2012. Very interesting read.
And I can't decide if I'm a fan of Michael Tsarion's or not. SOme of his stuff is damn interesting and some other stuff seems kinda crazy. Like most people I guess.

You know, I've watched "2012" go from something I read about on the shroomery, to something that I have had conversations about, to full blown in your face "IT'S REALLY HAPPENING, FOLKS" experiences, on drugs, in a field full of like minded individuals. All in the space of a few short years. I've watched the reality of it snowball onto my senses, picking up momentum as it goes.
Today I read this McKennaquote:
"the transcendental object is the despair of description, it cannot be known, it can only be approximated, it's the sacred heart of Jesus, it's the flying saucer, it's the philosopher's stone, it's good LSD, it's all of these things and more. It cannot--it transcends language and understanding, but the closer we get to it, the more it will be revealed. and the reason that the 20th century is so peculiar is that we're so close to the zero point, so close to the transcendental object that you know, take a hit, there it is, close your eyes and daydream, there it is, have an orgasm, there it is, it's trying to break through it's almost upon us, we've been sailing towards this thing for 72 billion years and now we're just years from impact, the walls are so steep the acceleration is so great that we are there for all practical purposes, and what siritual life means is realize that we are there, so that anxiety drains from your life, body and worldview. And then you just ride the wave, and when people talk about catastrophe, revelation and destruction, you just smile a small smile knowing that it will be all that and more, and more, and more"
Feel the humanity in that. Compare it to the words of our politicians. Call it escapism, but it's the only thing that makes sense to me in this fucked up world.
