red patches
    #590465 - 03/26/02 09:27 PM (22 years, 26 days ago)

on a fully colonized cake there is these dull (not bright) rust red/orange patches that seem to be part of the mycelum growth. not the usual yellow from water contact. they appeared after colonization--i think--while still in the 1/2 pint jar. on the bottom are a few near each other, but they dont seem to grow or spread. on the top (where i first noticed it birthing the cake) a simular color seemed to be going up into the dry layer plug and was very dryed out ropey but dusty stuff which at first i thought was some rust junk from the lids or something. but then this simular color is also on the bottom. any one have any clues or simular?

I had a light rusty-orange color on a bunch of my uncolonized and partially colonized cakes. Every cake that had the coloring wen't horribly bad. Some even had bright yellow growths after a while, which I am told can be very bad. The one cake that I left to see where it would go never fully colonized. After a month I disected it and the entire middle of the cake was a very mushy, very black, and horrid smelling mess.

Be careful of those red colored patches. They don't look like they grow at all...but all of my cakes wen't down and the red color was the first thing I noticed on every one of them.

I just posted a similar (I think) situation. The cake was almost 100%
colonized but for a spot about the size of a thumbprint. Then orange spots appeared on the substrate and the mycelium in that spot. I watched it for several days. The mycelium continued to grow slowly there. I had fat pins
already growing nearby this spot. So today I birthed the cake and removed the entire area with a sterile scalpel (approximately 1 inch diameter to about 1/2 to 3/4 inches deep into the cake). Inside looks normal. Stupid me -should have took a picture.
I will let you know how it goes.

Well, I got lucky (maybe). I wish I would have posted a pic. Here's a an analog video
still of the cake 4 days after surgery: As I said, the patch was pretty small. It was isolated to the last uncolonized part
of substrate (about the size of a thumbprint). It had small flecks of orange on the
mycelium and the substrate. Primordia were starting to swell quite a bit. So, I figured
I had nothing to lose.
