orange light on heater, incubator prob???
    #1055372 - 11/15/02 12:54 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Yello shrooms !

I've built myself an incubator last night, last thing i realized is that when "ON" the fish tank heater has a fucking orange light that iluminates the inside of the incubator,, now ..

jars have to be keps in dark right? will this be a problem?

I was going to wrap my glass jar in tinfoil to block some light out, but is this needed?

what do you all do about it?

Yes, light could be a problem. You can trigger frutting cycle before your jars are 100% colonized.... If that happen - you fuc*ed (Can't frut them, and abborts may rot)
Get that light out of there, use any menace necessary.
I would not "wrap my glass jar in tinfoil ", but just spray-paint tank heater.
Peace

considering the vast number of people who use this heating method (including me) without creating pins, i have to disagree.

I don't use tank heater myself, so my incubator is pitch dark.
The reason that I sad it "could" be a problem is that awry tek I read (more than just a few) sad incubator should be dark. Check the posts, somebody had a problem with cakes pinning before full colonization.
Peace

The orange light from your heater is obviously on the red end of the light spectrum, and I believe Stamets has stated in TMC that red light is not as likely to induce pins. It's the blue part of the spectrum you need to worry about. The low glow from your orange light should not be a problem as evidenced by the other poster in this thread that has used the same setup without problems. No worries.

cool!

one less problem to worry about!

thanks!

ps: spray paint the heater??????? ummmm, no. i think i'd want to see thru the glass incase the heater has problems ie: shorting out or whatever, and, you want to know how high to turn it up and when it's at working temp, the light needs to be seen at some point!...  it would work but i'd rather use tinfoil on the glass,

but anywho.... no worries since it seems to not be a prob!

It is not going to make too much of a difference, but shrooms prefer blue light over red light(orange).
