Outdoor Patch Questions (Loam, "CFU's", Sheep Manure)
    #4245741 - 06/01/05 07:51 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Hey fellow shroomers, Im in Ontario and Im preparing a second outdoor patch. The first was Amazon strain, 2 jars (supposedly 2 cups each) spawned to 20 kilos of cow manure, cased with gardening soil, peat, and vermiculite. We have been having some ant problems so today I picked up "Insectigone" for ants, its the first source of DE/Diatomaceous Earth I've found in the province, supposed to be 80% DE, 20% Ant attractant. Basically the grow area has thousands if not millions of these little red ants, they were swarming on my bag the second I put it down, and the little fuckers have been running around all over the patch, I hope they're not after the Myc-covered grains. The bed was not dug into the ground, its built on it, raising up. A day after laying down the casing layer I noticed manure from the bottom on top, so either ants are moving it or squirrels are digging for the grain. Ill put some soap shavings out there tomorrow in case. Anyways, I poured the DE around the perimiter, hope it wont be dangerous but no fruits yet so no worry. I enjoyed watching the fuckers rush into it and play themselves   Fuckin ants. I havent seen any signs of slugs or snails, I guess the legions of ants keep em in check.

So tomorrow I plan to make a patch twice as big and deeper. Unfortunately my Canadian tire didnt have cow manure, so I had to settle for some others. We got 1 bag of something like "Tripple Mix" which was manure(unspecified variety)/peat moss/loam. Ive never seen loam listed or used in shroom cultivation, will it being in the mix mess with the grow?. The other back was Green Earth Compost, a mix of cow manure/sheep manure/and i think peat. On the bag it said this mixture contains millions of "Colony forming units" or "CFU's" that help release soil nutrients and feed roots. This stood out to me. Should I take it to mean that the back is harbouring dangerous contams, or that it has the microbacteria we need and use for cultivation, the reason that we don't let temps go too high in sterilization?

I think that's about it, in order for this patch to take off faster I plan on using much much more spawn, and perhaps placing a tarp over the patch for colonization. Ive got vermiculite and peat moss for casing. Should I case immediately or wait till the surface is very colonized?

On the first patch which was spawned 2 mondays ago (may 2-4 i believe, theres no visible myc growth on the top (casing layer) It was cased form the start. About half a week or so ago when checking out why there was myc grain from the bottom sitting on the top I brought some of the bottom up, and saw some nice strong chrystally rhizo comin off the grain, so it was surviving and spawning at the start in this Canadian weather (Amazon is supposed to do well in the cold as well), but havent seen any growth near the top yet. It was a rather low spawn:substrate ratio but Is it possible that the ants couldve slowed down or even stopped the patch's growth?I hope this patch will pull through, ill just have to keep givin it time, water, and protection from ants.
Thanks for any help, advice or input you guys have.  :mushroom2:

Sounds exactly like my bed, I have not found any insecticide I feel comfortable with. But I've concluded that the ants aren't hurting anything, they're eating the grain, but it's already spawned to the poo. I don't think they'll continue eating the poo, but then them fire ants are varatious
I hope they trip their little nuts off :crazy2:

ant problems?
go to the hardware store and ask for Boric acid it a powder, normally sold for roaches but kicks the ass of ants.
just sprinkle it on the ant trail. (doesn't  take a lot.)
what it does is, it sticks to their legs, so they carry it back to the nest, it is slow death to the whole colony. :hellfire: :hellfire: :hellfire:
 i luv that Smiley

Hmm, so they were after the grains. I didnt have much spawn compared to the substrate, I hope to fuck they didnt raid the patch of all the myc, it was built upon a place we cleared, and the day after we cleared it their little tunnels had been re-erected, theyve had a week to feast, I hope im not too late. Ant problem should be taken care of.
My current questions are:
1. Does it matter if the substrate has loam in it?
2. Are these "CFU's" contams or beneficial bacteria?
3. Should I case immediately or after colonization?
4. Should I lay a tarp over the patch?
Thanks, stay blitzed

you could throw some wet straw or shredded cardboard on top if you want.
but no green manure.

this "Tripple Mix" sounds interesting. unspecified manure?
hope it isn't chicken shit (way too much nitrogen).
no telling what CFUs are but hopefully it is beneficial.
let us know how it grows  :mushroom2:s
