outdoor patch

i recently planted an outdoor patch in my flower bed. I did not use any dung, but simply dug a whole, put in a couple of cakes, mixed with damp potting soil, then covered with peat moss. Will this work?

I have a good spot for the trash can thing...it is an old tin horse thing its about 14 x 7space gets about 3.5 hours of light from like 1-4:30pm has alot of sand,is shaded well...I will do a grow log
