temperature question

I ordered an ecuadorian syringe and 4 myco bags from sporeworks.

The temperature in my house is kept at 68-70degrees. Is this warm enough for this to work?

NO, definetely NO, they will grow extremely slowly then go into a dormant stage and never finish, go to walmart buy a 20$ 50watt fishtank heater and a 2 dollar temp gauge, put the heater in a jar of water put this in your terrarium and put the temp gauge in there, you will end up being pissed off because they are taking forever, an incubator is very important, or you could learn the hard way, like 82-85 is good

The ideal temperature for mycelium colonization is 84?-86? Fahrenheit. Many of your questions can be answered through searching previous posts or read the Shroomery FAQ at http://shroomery.org/faq/faq.php?list=all&prog=1&lang=en

OK, my terrarium is a 22" x 15" X 12" clear tupperware box. I have the 50w heater in a half gallon glass milk jug in there. I have 2 more questions.

I know that during colonization, it is supposed to be dark. Will the small amount of light given off by the heater be a problem? Would it be advisable to wrap the bottle in electrical or duct tape?

Also, will the humidity in the box from this setup possibly cause a mold problem?

I just put my colonizing jars in a shoe box and place them ontop of a cable box. When left on, even if the tv is off, the cable box is quite warm. Sometimes if the temp is too high I stack a couple magazines between the shoe box and the cable box. It works surprisingly well. I get full colonization in under 2 weeks.

Put foil over you jug and you won't have to worry about
the humidity. You also won't have to refill your jug or worry
about the heater quiting because the water got too low.
The ideal temp is 86 but the mycelia will create a couple of
degrees so you should shoot for 84.
I can't imagine a heater putting off enough light to matter
but I haven't seen your heater. If you think so, foil might be
good for this also. Just a little blind to knock off the light.

Right now, my ghetto incubator :smile: is maintaining a steady 82 to 83. I covered the jug with a blacc tshirt, tho I'll probably try the foil idea.

The whole thing is covered with a blanket, because the temperature was staying around 75-78 without it.

Now I just need to wait for my spore syringe and bags to get here....
