Salvia Growing Tips?

I just received a salvia clone about a week and a half ago. The paper that I got with it says to not transplant it until at least 2-3 weeks after receiving it. I still have a couple questions about growing it though.

Right now I have the plant in front of a window that's fairly sunny but has tissue paper over it. I'm wondering if at any point I could take it out of the window and put my 400 Watt Halide lamp on it. Would that or wouldn't that be a good idea?

I'm also wondering how tall a salvia plant can get. Right now it's about a foot tall.

Lastly, I'm curious about how one would get a salvia plant to flower. And can the flowers be used for anything or is it just the leaves you would harvest?

Hmm, I'm wondering about the same thing. Instinctively I'd say 200 watt/sq meter would be better than the 400 watt/sq meter often used for weed.

Take cuttings, cuttings, cuttings, cuttings!

Salvia grows well but you can expect to lose a plant here and there, so make sure you have some to spare.

salvias like rainwater as opposed to well or city water. in one growing season a salvia can grow into a 3 to 5 gallon pot!

My mother salvia reached 6 feet in hieght, with 3, foot-long flowers! After cutting her back for winter, she is on her 2nd year, and already is 3 feet tall and growing rapidly.
Yield: 1/4 lb of leaves.

Thanks for the advice. I'll avoid the 400 Watt lamp I guess and eventually take some cuttings. The same place that I bought the plant from sells cloning root gel so I guess I'll buy some of that.

Hey hey, don't let this discourage you! If someone can confirm this 200W/m2, then you can simply use your 400W lamp to illuminate TWICE the floorspace, meaning twice teh harvest (say a circle 6ft in diameter)

Clone it like a madman, and give clones to EVERYONE, including grandma who merely wants to grow it as a pretty houseplant. Should a plague of Biblical proportions strike your grow, grandma will merrily give you a cutting so you can start anew. Redundency people: make sure you'll never lose this plant.

Kind of off-topic, Wiccan, but wouldn't it be easy (if and when salvia is demonized and criminalized) for a legal vendor in a different country to sell a US/European person a cutting?

If something is criminalized in your country, you can't receive it, and if it is criminalized in their country you can't send it.

:thumbup:  excellent! Salvia needs as many people with The Right Stuff as can be found! Salvia will likely become business, but right now it is still a Cause, like weed was in the 1960s-1970s
