Some Salvia grow fast, others slow, but why?

I took some cuttings of my first two salvia plants about a few months ago. While some of them reached over 1m in height in this time others grew only 10cm or less. All have similiar conditions to live in.
Now i wonder why that is so.
Then, my growing place can only hold a certain number of plants. Should i discard the smaller plants and concentrate on those which grow faster and only take cuttings of these to optimize the grow?
Does a plant which is a cutting of a slow growing plant also grow slower than others?

And my last question is.. What do you do if you have no more space left for new salvia? I dont want to throw cuttings away and dont know people who i could give them to, but sometimes i must cut them back to make the plants grow with more branches and stay in a certain size.
