the first 2 flushes were a little bit bigger, and i just noticed that the 3rd flush were hollow. no biggie since they were wider stems, but that has baffled me. any clues what the hell is happening???
also, how many fluches do you do with your cakes before using them n a casing?? i was thinking after the 3rd i'd case them...????

hollow could be a few things, probably due to running out of nutes, and probably the size. they're always hollow to an extent, just the hole that runs down the middle is sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller, so they seem more or less so. if they were bigger stems, you might just be noticing it more. also working on a theory that warmer temperatures lead to hollow stems but there's still experiments in progress there, but if your temps happened to have gone up for the third flush, i'd be interested to hear it.
and you make casings after 0 flushes. if you've gotten 3 flushes off a cake its almost spent. you might squeak out a few, but you probably would have anyway... casing it is surely a waste of time and materials at that point. either case them from the start or dont bother, IMO.

actually my tub stays at 75' almost perfectly. So, you dont think that if i case with HPOO it would re-vitalize the myceliums nutrient needs??? that is what i was hoping for anyways...

hpoo isn't a casing, its a bulk substrate
and no, if you try spawning to a bulk substrate with myc thats been through 3 flushes, you're almost promised a contam problem because it will colonize very slowly if at all, not to mention the outsides of your cakes have been sitting out exposed to airborn contams for quite some time that you'd just be mixing in with your substrate. vigorous, young, clean spawn is what you need if you're going to a bulk substrate with success.

definitely. even a mediocre to poor casing will out yield a cake left as a cake. it can be as simple as crumbling a couple cakes into little pieces into a tray and covering with plain verm. you can take it a lot further from there and spawn those crumbled pieces to coir, hpoo, straw, compost, etc and multiply the amount of substrate you have by 3-4 times over... and stepping up to some more appropriate casing mixes like 50/50+ will get you even better pinsets. but theres absolutely no question its something you want to do with freshly birthed cakes... spent cakes work best with the garbage can tek.
