Hollow Stems
    #3123940 - 09/11/04 09:48 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

i have noticed that my friend's dry fruits have thick solid stems,
and and my sister's fruits are dry and hollow like straw.

does this have to do with strain or grow conditions?

anyone know which strain grows more solid stems?
or which grow conditions cause the hollow ones?

I noticed that if my fruiting chamber is too humid or water gathers in the trays then the fruits tend to be hollow. However my buffalo shit casing which is in a seperate container and is usually a bit dry pops out fat thick stemmed beasties.

I think its high humidity.

That's what I was going to say as well. Not that I know for sure. But seems to be what I've read.

Hollow stems are definitely not strain related (fact) they may very well be substrate related from my own experience, I won't rule out humidity but I very much doubt that from my experiences also.

oh temp rated i think its a way for them to get stuff done fast! thats my idea. i think they have decided that they did all that work and if their is a temp flux bad enough they want to get shit done before they die.

IME with any single strain I've had hollow stems and solid stems. I've seen more hoolow stems on BRF and have had nothing but solid stems say with WBS and rye so it may have something to do with "whole grains" compared to diluted substrate (brown rice/verm). I've grown through a variety of humidifying teks and really haven't seen that it made a difference at all. This has become my own conclusion from my own experience I've often wondered about the rate of growth and hollow stems also. just my $.02

sounds interesting. So you suggest grains in order to have a denser stem, thus hugher yields?

Grains and dung/straw both have given me solid stem fruits repeatedly.
